School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization made up of hundreds of volunteers, who give their time, talents, and support to the educational needs of children experiencing homelessness. Founded in 1993, the mission of School on Wheels. is the enhancement of educational opportunities for children without a home, from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Our goal is to shrink the gaps in the education of these children and provide them with the highest quality education possible.

Since 1993 we have:

  • Provided mentoring and tutoring for more than 50,000 students – each one with a story, past, and future.
  • We reach six counties in Southern California covering some 2,500 square miles.
  • We partner with 400+ sites across our region. Those sites include shelters, school districts, and after-school programs.
  • Each year we provide some 5,000 students with the school supplies they need.

Position Overview

As a Volunteer Support Coordinator, you will be responsible for recruiting, managing and supporting volunteers who work to change the lives of the homeless students they tutor. The Temporary Volunteer Engagement Coordinator oversees a defined geographic area in Los Angeles. This position can be remote in terms of a home office and/or based in our Skid Row Learning Center. Travel to shelters, volunteers and students may be required. This position is temporary, full time 40 hours per week lasting for 4-5 months, possibly longer.

Major Responsibilities

  • Focus on researching current lists of TWs (tutors waiting to be placed) and SWs (students waiting for a tutor)
  • Work as a team with the student coordinator to find appropriate match for these TWs and SWs.
  • Support and train volunteers, ensuring they have the tools needed to tutor their students.
  • Conduct first session with tutors and students following all required procedures.
  • Marketing, outreach, and recruitment of new volunteers with targeted recruitment based on needs.
  • Conduct volunteer phone interviews using standard questions and procedures.
  • Communicate with volunteers with a focus on personal connections and responsiveness to needs.
  • Regular meetings with volunteers to provide a sense of community and to share ideas.
  • Work with student coordinator to reach every homeless family who needs our services.
  • Communicate with volunteers, shelters, schools, and other site staff
  • Maintain an updated schedule of tutoring
  • Ensure tutors are consistently logging hours
  • Respond to inquiries about tutoring for regions
  • Highlight star volunteers and students, share success stories.
  • Database reporting, updating, and tracking of current volunteers and students, as well as alumni.

Qualifications

  • One to three years experience managing volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of Salesforce or similar database management software
  • Working knowledge of Google Suite, Zoom
  • Passion for education
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Empathy for students experiencing homelessness
  • Strong communications/presentation experience
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • At least one year of experience in managing volunteers
  • Educational requirement – Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Must be currently fully vaccinated against COVID-19
  • Must pass a Livescan Fingerprint background check

Temporary positions are non benefited but do receive paid sick leave
