As a scientist-owned and science- and technology- driven company, MiTeGen has been developing innovative solutions for X-ray and electron-based diffraction and imaging and for biomolecular and pharmaceutical R&D since 2004. We're looking for talented innovators to join our team as we continue to expand our capabilities and market reach.

Position Description:

MiTeGen designs, develops and manufactures a variety of products from microfabricated tools to complex multifunction instruments. The Systems Engineer will focus on developing our line of instruments and on developing manufacturing processes and hardware for new products.

The Systems Engineer:

  • Takes guidance for daily activities and longer term efforts from the Engineering Manager and the CTO.
  • Explores approaches to solving challenging application-oriented problems.
  • Assists in preparing patent applications and user guides/manuals.
  • Supports other development and production staff in their tasks and in solving issues and answering questions in your areas of expertise.
  • Uses software tools for simulations and CAD design.
  • Designs, constructs, and modifies mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Develops software for instrument control and user interfaces.
  • Integrates multiple subsystems into final product.
  • Develops testing plans and protocols. Uses specifications and drawings to develop mechanical QA test devices. Performs Design Verification Tests.
  • Identifies and works with vendors to obtain components with desired specifications.
  • Uses software tools to perform product integration and testing tasks.
  • Performs assembly tasks as required.

Key skills and attributes:

Demonstrated abilities with:

  • Mechanical design
  • Reading mechanical assembly drawings
  • Reading schematics
  • Matlab, Mathematica, ANSYS, Solidworks or other programming for modeling and simulation
  • At least one CAD program (Solidworks preferred)
  • Programming for hardware control/communications and user interfaces (e.g., Labview, ladder logic )
  • Solid math skills
  • Ability to work as part of a tightly-knit small team
  • Ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision
  • Estimate the time required to complete a task
  • Commit and complete tasks on time and on budget

Additionally, the Systems Engineer must:

  • Work well with others and contribute positively to team morale
  • Have a growth mindset and be willing to expand their skillset into new domains (guidance and training supplied)
  • Take direction from the engineering staff and CTO
  • Communicate component, product, and process improvements, enhancements and concerns
  • Know when to ask for help
  • Use tests to answer specific questions or to figure out an unknown
  • Write a complete, concise, accurate report on an activity

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in multiple areas that may include:

  • Cryogenics
  • Precision measurements
  • Programming for modeling and simulation
  • Sensors
  • Stepper and/or servo motors
  • Mechanical drawing and tolerance training
  • Control systems
  • Basic design-for UL/CE knowledge
  • Hardware/software integration testing
  • Instrument design, assembly, and manufacture
  • 3D printing
  • 5S principles and workplace organization methods

Experience: Ideally 5 years or more; can include graduate work.

Education: We are looking for candidates with a Ph.D., M.S., or B.S. in an engineering or science field, including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, applied physics ,or equivalent experience.

Physical Requirements: The position requires the ability to efficiently and accurately perform tasks at a computer workstation, and to safely use various laboratory equipment and perform basic prototype and product assembly tasks using hand and power tools.

Work Environment: MiTeGen employees work in a mixed office / laboratory / small-production environment, where all employees maintain a safe, clean, orderly workspace and all contribute to a positive, encouraging environment.

Location: MiTeGen is located in beautiful Ithaca, NY, home of Cornell University and Ithaca College, in the Finger Lakes wine region.

Travel: Typically little to no travel would be expected. Requirement to travel to assist with a customer visit, vendor visit, or attend a conference/trade show or related activity could arise.
