This is a 2023 Summer position.

SOC Operator is responsible for receiving and evaluating calls concerning security, fires, and medical emergencies. Specific duties include evaluating calls for proper action, initiating response by obtaining information required for dispatching field units, and entering data into a computer as it is being received. Calls and messages include routine reports, referral information, and emergency calls for assistance.

SOC Operators work in the Summit Operations Center (SOC) which is the central communications center for the SBR. The SOC is a twenty-four hour, seven days per week operation involving multi-department dispatching and information dissemination.

SOC Operators ensure that all informational updates are communicated to appropriate personnel and between SOC Operators. SOC Operators monitor day-to-day operations and emergency situations that may arise e.g., severe weather, lost participant, medical response & etc. They provide critical communications and situational awareness to Program and SBR leadership.

Reports to: Emergency Management Officer

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Monitor critical factors influencing Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR) Operations such as, but not limited to, emergency medical response, severe weather, special events, transportation and participant movement, action area operational status and site security.
  • Provide clear, concise, and timely communications via; Message management system, two-way radio, IM, texting, email and PA system as needed.
  • Ensure proper and timely input of all incidents in computer log system.
  • Provide pertinent operational information to SBR leadership.
  • Any other duties as assigned by full-time staff and/or direct supervisor

Qualifications & Training:

  • Must be able to effectively manage flow of information from multiple sources, prioritize communications and appropriate response/dispatch protocols.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively on two-way radio (verbal), in written form (email, IM and Word) and in person with staff, peers and guests/customers.
  • Must be able to obtain a SBR driving permit by submitting driving record and successfully completing in-house safe driving course.
  • NIMS 100 and 700
  • Be or become a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America
  • 21 Years old or older

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and handle materials up to 70 lbs
  • Must be able to work shift work
  • Must meet the Summit Bechtel Reserve's high adventure height/weight requirements as laid out in the Summit BSA Health & Medical Record

Uniform: Summit Staff Uniform

  • SBR blue polo or BSA Field Uniform (Scouts BSA, Venturing, or Sea Scout)
  • Shorts/Pants should be of the appropriate length/size/appropriateness for a Scouting setting.
  • Shoes should be closed-toe, neat/clean and show the appearance of being new or slightly worn. No wild colors.

Housing: 10x12' Platform Tent; Foxtrot Base Camp Staff Area
