TITLE: Student Support Services Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY: The primary role of the Student Support Services Specialist is to promote student engagement, retention, and academic success at the Excel Center through extra support services and re-engagement efforts in collaboration various GEC Teams. The Student Support Services Specialist supports the mediation and discipline activities in accordance with GEC’s policies, procedures, mission and vision in collaboration with the Manager, Student Support Services. The Student Support Specialist will work to build relationships with students and provide resources to support improved behavior and achievement of academic success while supporting identified barrier removal and extra re-engagement efforts through facilitated small groups and support groups. The Student Support Services Specialist will be a key resource to GEC staff in addressing student behavior and discipline concerns in collaboration with the Manager, Student Support Services. This position is responsible and will be held accountable for behaving in accordance with divisional and organizational RISE values and expectations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1.Collaborates with the Manager of Student Support Services to support the overall school culture and school safety of the campus by building relationships with students, staff, and building management.
2.Serves as a resource for teachers and coaches who express concerns related to behavior and/or discipline and is responsible for coordinating and communicating appropriate responses in collaboration with the Manager of Student Support Services and the site-based Leadership Team.
3.Monitors the implementation of the GEC code of conduct at the school campus and disciplinary processes and procedures. Collects all incident reports and documentation and collaborate with the Manager of Student Support Services on next steps for each incident as needed. Ensures these areas are in compliance with DC Public Charter School Board and OSSE regulations.
4.Provides extra support to identified students (ie: one on one conversations, small group sessions, team meetings) as a way to engage the student on the pathway to productivity and remove barriers.
5.Serves as a member of the Re-Engagement Team and makes re-engagement phone calls, participates in re-engagement meetings, and all re-engagement processes and follow-up.
6.In collaboration with the Manager of Student Support Services and other identified staff members, facilitates student focused mediations and re-entry meetings.
7.In collaboration with the Manager of Student Support Services and Academic Success Coaches, coordinates, and schedules meetings with students’ support teams and/or parents to discuss and address strategies for improving students’ behavior and success.
8.Observes classes and hallway interactions to build relationships with students and identify behavior intervention needs. Confers with key GEC staff members and when necessary, makes appropriate referrals for SST (Student Support Team) meetings. Leads SST meetings.
9.Resolves student behavior concerns, in a fair and timely manner, and documents and maintains records of disciplinary or referral actions taken. Has experience in behavior de-escalation and conflict-resolution. Ensures all documentation is uploaded into PowerSchool as directed by the Manager of Student Support Services.
10.Monitors the physical plant of the school building and surrounding area to identify and follow-up on any student incidents involving neighbors and the surrounding community.
11.Assists the Manager of Student Support Services in the interpretation of school district programs relating to student substance abuse, bullying, truancy and implementation of school activities that address these areas.
12.Provides innovative ideas to programming to support student engagement and community building (such as small group session, lunchtime activities) and leads and monitors such programming at the school.
13.Other job duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
1.Bachelor’s Degree
2.Two or more years of experience in school sector, social work, counseling, advising, academic guidance or academic related field.
3.Must possess ability to collect, interpret, and synthesize diagnostic and assessment data and information about a student’s social history, community environment, family dynamics, economic differences, and significant crises that influence academic and behavioral functioning
4.Must have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as an interdisciplinary team member and devise an appropriate service plan for referred students and families.
5.Must possess excellent communication and time management skills.
6.Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community agencies, students, families, team members, and others.
7.Ability to accept and/or drive change positively; demonstrate strong planning and organizational skills and initiative.

Preferred Qualifications
1.Experience in facilitating and/or offering social science, family counseling, rehabilitation counseling, student counseling/ personnel services, mental health and human services, individual/ family development, family and community services.
2.Experience working with high school-aged students or adults in a nontraditional setting strongly preferred.
3.Master’s degree or a certification in education, social work, psychology, or a human service-related discipline.
4.Access to reliable transportation.

Physical Demands
Light
Lifting 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/ carrying objects weighing up to10 pounds. Walking or standing to a significant degree, involves sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing and pulling.

Work Environment
Limited
General office environment infrequently exposed to extreme atmospheric conditions (temperature, noise, fumes, dust, etc.)
