Structures Optimization Engineer Job at Divergent 3D

Divergent 3D Torrance, CA

$110,000 - $130,000 a year
Divergent is on a mission to democratize the design and manufacture of vehicles. We want to enable a future where small entrepreneurial teams across the globe will bring increasingly material and energy efficient transportation solutions to market with a fraction of the capital and time.

Divergent has invented a complete manufacturing solution to address system level challenges. The Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPS) is a complete software hardware solution designed to replace traditional vehicle manufacturing. To make the complex simple, it is a complete modular digital factory for complex structures. Given a set of digital requirements as input, the machine automatically computationally engineers, additively manufactures, and assembles any complex structure. The system is able to move seamlessly between manufacturing different vehicle models.

Position: Structures Optimization Engineer

Divergent aims to revolutionize the auto industry through 3D printing. Our patented production system incorporates Nodes - 3D printed metal connectors - with lightweight materials to create strong and efficient complex structures. Divergent’s technology eliminates tooling and drives radical innovation, capital reduction, and sustainability in vehicle manufacturing. We put a powerful new set of tools into the hands of creative innovators, enabling success in the auto industry for a new generation. Our engineering prototype, Czinger 21C, is the world's first 3D printed hypercar.

Divergent is seeking an experienced and motivated engineer to support the next generation of industry-leading vehicle structural architecture development. We’re committed to transforming the vehicle structural systems away from traditional body in white to a 3D printing enabled system using new materials and new technologies. To do this, we need a forward-looking and innovative engineer who will help shape the future of automotive structures.

What You'll Do::

  • Design and analyze Node™-based vehicle structures using hand calculations, topology optimization, and CAD/CAE tools
  • Create, refine, and execute new technical solutions for vehicle structures to support internal vehicle programs and joint development efforts with external customers
  • Develop updated structural designs for and perform engineering analysis on existing programs
  • Execute engineering design release of structural components and subsystems
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment within the Structures team and cross-functionally with other disciplines to efficiently design and release structures that are optimized for mass, efficient production and assembly
  • Work cross-functionally to implement cost reduction, methods and product improvements, and support prototype and production build activities

What You'll Have:

  • Designed, analyzed, tested, and released structural components or systems for automotive or aerospace vehicles
  • Performed detailed engineering analysis on structural components and systems using CAD and CAE programs
  • Written detailed test plans and/or worked closely with test engineers to ensure component and system-level testing is performed to ensure the safe and efficient function of the design
  • Worked closely with manufacturing engineers to understand manufacturing capabilities and limitations to ensure designs can be efficiently produced and assembled
  • Collaborated successfully in a team environment to ensure cross-functional requirements are met while achieving design targets

Requirements:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Prior experience using advanced materials (composites, adhesives, metals) to achieve lightweight structural solutions
  • 3+ years proven track record of shipping innovative, robust and maintainable commercial products through a full cycle development process
  • 3+ years of CAD and CAE experience
  • Solid interpersonal skills, motivated self-starter who can managing personal workload and execution to tight schedule
  • Experience interfacing with engineering and manufacturing groups to understand system designs and the associated constraints
