Position Focus:

Yale University Cleanroom is an advanced research core facility with an expanding suite of micro/nanofabrication instruments, which offers expert consultation, training and technical support to users of all backgrounds. Reporting to the University Cleanroom Director, the Staff Scientist will engage directly with the Yale research community to support cutting-edge research such as quantum science, nonlinear optics, photonics, and biomedical engineering. The successful candidate should have a strong interest in teaching, significant hands-on experience in process development and/or Cleanroom management, and a solid background in physical sciences and engineering.

Key responsibilities include: providing expertise, technical support and training to Cleanroom users; developing and updating Cleanroom processes in compliance with environmental health & safety guidelines; supporting micro-/nanofabrication research utilizing the Cleanroom equipment; engaging research groups to expand the Cleanroom userbase; performing regular Cleanroom maintenance and service; maintaining an efficient and effective Cleanroom operation.

The Staff Scientist will have primary responsibility in dry etching (RIE, ICP-RIE, DRIE) and thin film growth (LPCVD, PECVD, ALD), with exposure to lithography, materials deposition (evaporation, sputtering, etc.), wet chemistry, and packaging. The Staff Scientist will collaborate with YINQE (Yale Institute for Nanoscience and Quantum Engineering), Yale West Campus Cleanroom and other core facilities to support the cutting-edge research on Yale campus.

Essential Duties

1. Develop and implement Cleanroom processes along with ensuring the facility complies with all health and safety standards. 2. Develop, implement, and improve state of the art research applications that enable researchers to fabricate materials, devices and processes on equipment in the Cleanroom. 3. Assist Cleanroom users with research activities including project planning, troubleshooting problems and assisting with the development of unique processing capabilities. 4. Assist in managing research groups’ utilization of the cleanroom to ensure the efficient flow of research projects. 5. Assist with specifying and installing new equipment, when needed, and developing associated processes and procedures. 6. Perform initial user laboratory training and testing, vetting potential users’ capability to utilize the cleanroom in a safe manner. Train users in proper operation of process equipment. Monitor and ensure lab safety compliance. 7. Perform maintenance and repair of Cleanroom equipment, including high vacuum systems, plasma process systems, and thermal process systems. 8. Assist in tracking billing charges for the Cleanroom. Assist in maintaining the lab management systems and monthly billing process. Maintain accurate cost accounting records. 9. Develop relationships with internal contacts such as faculty, researchers, students, research staff, machine shops, administrators, physical plant and other technical support groups to both consult on research projects and maintain efficient cleanroom operation. 10. Interact with vendors, suppliers, manufacturing companies; and other research institutions to develop and design specialized equipment and instruments. 11. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in engineering and six years of related experience in a research development facility or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Significant hands-on cleanroom fabrication experience.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to present ideas and communicate effectively, both verbally and in written materials.

Self-motivated with demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to function independently and utilize sound judgment and creativity in planning and investigating problems and evaluating solutions.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to work well within a team supporting Cleanroom operations.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in physical science/engineering or equivalent experience.
10+ years hands-on micro-/nanofabrication experience and/or cleanroom management experience.
