Summary: Join our team to fight factory farming and shift food system assets in support of compassion, justice, and sustainability for farm animals, people, and the planet. The Outreach and State Policy Specialist works to advance Farm Sanctuary’s advocacy agenda by:

  • Building issue and policy networks with aligned food system sustainability, health, farmer, worker, community, justice, and animal-centered advocacy organizations.
  • Engaging state policymakers and administrative agencies to learn from and educate key policy stakeholders, supporting more just, sustainable, community-driven, plant-based food systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform outreach to state policymakers, staff, and relevant advocacy organizations to advance Farm Sanctuary’s state advocacy agenda
  • Represent Farm Sanctuary in state and regional coalitions with aligned organizations to advance Farm Sanctuary’s state advocacy agenda, participating in coalition meetings and activities
  • Engage Farm Sanctuary’s members and supporters to advance Farm Sanctuary’s advocacy efforts, including by coordinating letter-writing campaigns, facilitating drafting and submission of legislative hearing testimony, and partnering with Farm Sanctuary’s communications team to schedule and draft action alerts
  • In collaboration with the Federal Policy Specialist, perform outreach to farmer, worker, environment, health, and community-centered organizations involved in Farm Sanctuary’s federal review of the food system supply chain.
  • Review requests for Farm Sanctuary to join coalitions and sign on to letters, and recommend which opportunities to participate in, applying Farm Sanctuary’s advocacy decision-making criteria
  • Monitor, research, and report on legislative and regulatory developments relevant to the organization’s advocacy priorities
  • Track Farm Sanctuary’s advocacy activities, providing written updates on Farm Sanctuary’s advocacy activities for Farm Sanctuary’s website, newsletters, and other constituent communications, and recording lobbying time and expenses
  • Respond to advocacy-related inquiries from Farm Sanctuary constituents

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years’ relevant experience working as a campaigner, community organizer, in Congressional or agency office, with particular preference given to those with experience in food justice or food system sustainability.
  • Proven excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively, and to proactively identify and solve problems
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handling varied tasks simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent educational experience
  • Demonstrated interest in and support for the mission and campaigns of Farm Sanctuary
  • Alignment with Farm Sanctuary’s values of compassion, understanding, integrity, transformation, and freedom.
  • Familiarity, commitment to, and experience with the practice of equity and social justice, and the principles embedded in Farm Sanctuary’s mission

Specifications:

  • Terms of employment: Full-time, at will, exempt position
  • Reports to: Senior Director, Advocacy
  • Location: Remote
  • Pay: $58,000-63,000, commensurate with experience
  • Travel: No travel required

  • Stage 3: 1-hour video call with three members of our Advocacy team
    • This stage includes a paid skills assessment.
