BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Principal, instruct special education students individually and in small groups in accordance with policies and procedures; develop and implement IEP goals, assess students, and coordinate programs to increase independence and functioning in society, socially, vocationally and academically.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Design and implement curriculum and lesson plans for individualized and group instruction; schedule instructional periods; assess student progress. Instruct in other academic areas related to student grade level including math competencies, student computer proficiency, writing skills, art media.
  • Instruct students with emotional disturbances utilizing individualized programming in order to implement and achieve IEP goals.
  • Participate as a member of IEP teams; attend IEP meetings; provide input to IEP goals; conduct pre and post assessments and perform other data collection; prepare IEP reports and maintain district contacts regarding IEPs.
  • Design and implement appropriate behavior management techniques for use in instructional and disciplinary purposes.
  • Plan and supervise curriculum-related field trips to the community to enhance social skills, life skills as related to instructional objectives.
  • Collaborate with parents and provide parents a written quarterly student progress report and quarterly IEP goals and objectives progress reports.
  • Participate in a variety of special project teams and committees; participate in teacher and staff meetings and other in-service training programs.
  • Prepare a variety of reports for parents, and other community agencies, administration and others.
  • Collaborate with other Teachers, Clinicians, Specialists and others regarding student progress; schedule Student Conferences and Treatment Teams on students on an as needed basis.
  • Provide vocational assessment and planning as part of the Transition Plan for applicable students.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Principles, theories, practices, methods and techniques used in curriculum development and classroom instruction.
  • Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
  • Child guidance principles and practices related to children with emotional disturbances.
  • Necessary computer skills as part of the technology curriculum in the classroom.
  • Curriculum and lesson plan development to meet IEP goals.
  • Terminology involved in special education programs.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:

  • Instruct students with emotionally and behaviorally challenges, in appropriate curricular areas per grade level to further achieve IEP goals.
  • Understand and relate to children with special needs.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress.
  • Train and provide work direction to others.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Work independently.
  • Meet schedules and time lines.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Minnesota Department of Education License or the ability to obtain license before employment.
