Our Retail sites provide customers with the best fuels, and they are evolving to cater to our customers increasing demands for convenience shopping and meet their expectations for quality foodservice and coffee categories. These categories represent the next area of focused growth for our US Convenience Business. Starting initially with a traditional coffee and food service offering the successful candidate will develop and implement the food service strategy that is relevant to our customers to become a destination category for our stores.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

The Space Manager is responsible for ensuring business excellence through the provision of industry leading micro and macro space planning through working with a 3rd party. The Space Manager is required to set up the Space planning capabilities with a 3rd party and after launch of this partnership be responsible for managing planogram hierarchies, store area analysis, floorplans, and reporting, evolving micro and macro plans whilst identifying constant opportunities to increase performance.

Our Space Manager is responsible for managing the space on our service stations to drive profitable growth, now and in the future through a 3rd party relationship. Working with the 3rd party means that the Space Manager will own the strategy for space planning, the priorities and managing the 3rd party for flawless delivery of planograms and macro site lay-outs. The holder will also be responsible for keeping abreast of all new market developments, benchmarking Shell performance against the competition and identifying untapped or future growth opportunities. Due to the wide scope of work, he/she must have strong analytical skills and the experience needed to analyze reports and market data to provide robust recommendations. He/she is responsible for working with Category Managers to co-own profitable micro space range reviews and planograms, maximizing macro space to deliver sales and profit through managed floorplans.

Job Duties:

  • Set up a partnership with a Space Planning provider to support the CR business in maximizing the sales in each store.
  • Launch the partnership internally and set-up of ways of working for the internal teams.

After launch of the Space Planning partnership:

  • Ensure optimal use of micro and macro space; undertake robust assessments of sales per linear feet across the Shell network for assigned categories or formats.
  • Provide macro store plans for new store openings, expansions and resets (including layouts, category selection and merchandising equipment) to ensure best use of space for customer demographic or format type.
  • Create and maintain micro space planograms in line with the annual range review calendar, working in close collaboration with Category Managers to augment CR revenue in line with stretching plans.
  • Present recommendations for new space allocations or equipment solutions that will drive incremental sales and margin growth.
  • Provide ongoing planogram support to maximize sales performance from seasonal, limited edition and promotional features.
  • Undertake regular field visits in market visiting Shell company owned alongside competitor store visits (forecourt, convenience, high street and travel).
  • Establish a cross-functional relationship across Category Management, Supply Chain, Sales and Network.

Experience and Skills Required:

  • Strong analytical skills - robust analytical skills with a rounded understanding of retail alongside the dynamics of the shopper, underpinned by a deep consumer led mindset.
  • Strong commercial acumen - demonstrable understanding of the metrics for sales, margin, profitability, and performance per linear feet supported with strong understanding of other influencing factors.
  • Ability to influence and get work done through others who are not direct reports
  • Working knowledge of c-store customer journey development and inside store layouts.
  • Retail store experience and understanding of retail— selling and/or retail operating environment is desired.
  • General awareness of safety and customer access governmental guidelines.

Other qualifications:

  • Experience - minimum 5 years’ experience in both micro and macro space planning with either a retailer or blue-chip FMCG supplier.
  • High technical competence - expert knowledge of JDA space planning software including assortment optimization and floor planning combined with working knowledge of CAD and core MI tools (Excel, Business Objects & Power BI) being an advantage.
