Description

The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) full-time position in the class of Solid Waste Attendant at the Department of Community Services (Integrated Waste Division). The eligible list that established from this recruitment will be used to fill future vacancies that become available.

The Position
This position is located at the Yolo County Central Landfill. The landfill is a seven (7) day per week operation, schedules may include any day of the week and typically includes at least one (1) or both weekend days. The current standard work shift is 6:15 AM to 4:45 PM or 8:15am to 4:45pm.

Incumbents perform considerable work inside as well as outside; work closely with others, and may perform considerable work on sometimes slippery and uneven surfaces. Incumbents are required to drive a vehicle, and can expect to be exposed to dust, sun, cold weather, grease and oils; may work around heavy equipment and other objects and vehicles. This class requires that the person stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, frequent lifting of objects up to twenty-five pounds and occasional lifting of objects up to fifty pounds may be required.

Under general supervision performs responsible cashiering work at the landfill and transfer stations in accordance with division and County cash management guidelines; estimates, collects and accounts for disposal fees; safeguards and accounts for receipts; directs traffic to appropriate waste disposal locations; inspects disposal loads for hazardous materials; inspects and collects paint and other hazardous materials; prepares and participates in periodic load checking of incoming refuse, and examines these loads for unacceptable materials; approves and rejects such loads depending on their content; performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

Employment Standards

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade; AND
Experience: One year of general experience assessing solid waste, collecting fees from the public, performing data recordkeeping, or work closely related to the duties of the Solid Waste Attendant classification.

License
Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.

General knowledge of: computer systems and software; simple math and record keeping; cash and receipt handling techniques, methods and practices; safe work practices.

Ability to: deal effectively with the public and others; learn to assess waste disposal loads; operate a computer system and truck scale; keep complete and accurate records; perform light cleanup work; work a flexible schedule; operate a cash register and balance; work with and understand the reporting of local credit bureau complaints; add, subtract, multiply and divide with a high degree of accuracy and speed; keep accurate records of transactions; follow instructions.

Physical Ability to: walk on steep slopes; walk, stand, sit, stoop and squat for considerable amounts of time; be able to lift up to 25 pounds and walk on irregular surfaces and climb for a moderate amount of time; be able to reach above shoulders, use hands, fingers, and legs for moderate amount of time; be able to see things up close and far away with depth perception; read charts; must have good vision and be able to hear heavy equipment noises.
