Job Title: Sheetfed Second Operator
Reports To: Plant/Press Manager
Job Description: Hourly – Non-Exempt
Location: Minneapolis, MN & Milwaukee, WI

6am-2pm Mon-Fri

Purpose of Position: To set-up, adjust, operate, and maintain a multi-unit, sheet-fed printing press. Printing brochures, catalogs, books, mailers, annual reports, etc. per written specifications following Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P.’s). Perform the Sheet-fed First Operator job duties in his/her absence.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Verify from the information on the job ticket and the staged materials (plates, paper stock, inks, etc.) that requirements are correct before initiating the make ready process.
  • Perform the Sheet-fed First Operator job duties in his/her absence if applicable.
  • Interact with customers for ‘Press Okays’ when necessary.
  • Be able to neatly pile paper in preparation for feeding into press.
  • Successfully get sheets through the press from Feeder to Delivery while maintaining consistent side guide and head to tail register.
  • Rule out printed sheets in order to confirm that all trims, perforations, scores, bleeds, knock-outs, and color breaks are in the proper position if needed.
  • Assist First Operator when needed in inspecting printed sheets or signatures visually after registration or position approvals and readjusts guides and controls to correct errors or inconsistencies.
  • Inspect printed sheets or signatures visually and with densitometer or Image control technology after registration or position approvals and readjust guides and controls to achieve correct color if necessary.
  • Monitor color, fit, and registration quality by following SOP’s for continuity pulls.
  • Complete paperwork related to job function (counter readings, signing job tickets, etc.).
  • Convey essential information to incoming shift personnel to minimize production delays and maximize efficiency.
  • Practice safe work habits and housekeeping by coaching press crews on safety and area maintenance and assisting with these responsibilities.
  • Hanging printing plates on printing cylinder and fill ink fountains.
  • Adjusting feed controls in order to maintain accurate and consistent paper feeding.
  • Unlocking plates and replacing with new plates according to directions indicated on plate and job ticket regarding location and time of printing.
  • Assisting First Operator in inspecting printed material visually during production and readjusting controls to correct irregular ink distribution, picking/hickeys, etc. when needed.
  • Replacing worn or damaged blankets and filling depleted ink wells.
  • Cleaning, inspecting, and lubricating the moving parts of the press.
  • Do required maintenance when necessary

Skills and Abilities:
  • Use hand tools or machines to perform operations appropriately and safely.
  • Read job tickets, job information, purchase orders, blueprints, diagrams, or drawings of items to be produced, purchased, maintained, or repaired.
  • Measure, cut, or otherwise work on materials or objects with great precision and accuracy.
  • Use arithmetic or shop geometry to figure and verify amounts of material needed, dimensions to be followed, and cost of materials.
  • Able to visualize what the finished product will look like.
  • Accept responsibility for the accuracy of the product produced.
  • Accept responsibility for the efficiency of the production process.

Physical Demands: Requires standing, walking, and bending throughout the entire shift. Necessitates frequent lifting and carrying of materials up to 40 pounds and on occasion, more. To move objects by lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling. Requires the ability to bend and twist at the waist, stoop or crouch, and kneel on an occasional basis. Occasionally requires reaching, handling, and hand-to-eye coordination.

Vision requirements include near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, full field of vision, and 100% color vision. No experience necessary, will train to become an operator.

Pay range: $18.00 to $23.00 depending on experience.
