Strategic Management Solutions, LLC (SMSI) is seeking skilled senior level Radiation Control Technicians (RCTs) to support our projects at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). RCTs support a wide variety of different work activities across a broad range of facilities and can learn new skills and expand their expertise in the identification and understanding of radiological hazards and controls. RCTs implement radiation protection requirements and work independently on challenging projects requiring collaboration with multiple work groups. Assignments can involve activities in varying work environments and weather conditions. The successful candidates will:

  • Provide RCT leadership and expertise to projects and teams of RCTs on a variety of activities – in the field and in the office.
  • Act in a supporting role in the instruction and execution of the RW training program as required, to include classroom and online instruction, hands-on learning activities, and practical evaluations for early and mid-career personnel.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Current or previous qualification as an RCT.
  • Experience in the delivery of OJT (on the job training) and/or formal classroom/online radiological training.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in implementing radiation protection programs and procedures in operational environments.
  • Experience performing high-hazard radiological work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in responding to radiological incidents and emergencies.
  • Knowledge of federal and local regulations pertaining to the content and requirements of a RW training program.
  • Experience in a lead radiation control technician role, to include assigning radiological work, implementing radiological work procedures, issue resolution, and supervision of radiological work practices
  • Experience mentoring/training less experienced RCTs in the use of radiological instruments and the conduct of radiological work
  • Advanced experience in planning radiological work, to include the development and/or approval of radiological work permits
  • Advanced experience in providing support for moderate and high hazard radiological work independently
  • Advanced experience in responding to radiological events (CAM alarm, ARM alarm, personnel contamination, etc.)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Education/Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Education, Health/Nuclear Physics, and/or Nuclear Engineering is preferred, and a minimum of 5-10 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education: Highschool degree, or equivalent and 5-years of job-related experience.

Desired Qualifications:


  • Radiological Work Permit (RWP) Authority or similar experience
  • Technical Safety Qualification Program (TSQP) Specialist or similar experience
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF software products
  • National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) certification


Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Reading vision; Ability to speak; Ability to hear in a normal range.

Work Environment: Use of protective clothing, including safety glasses and radiological anti-contamination clothing.


Clearance: Ability to be approved for DOE Q clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires US Citizenship. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
