UCAR is excited to announce the job opening for the Science Education (SciEd) Outreach and Education Specialist I role.

As a member of the School and Public Programs (SPP) team in the UCAR Center for Science Education (SciEd), based at the NCAR Mesa Lab in Boulder, CO, the person in this position will: facilitate both in-person and virtual science education and outreach programs including Mesa Lab field trips and exhibit tours, virtual field trips and tours, and public events for preK-12 school groups, the general public, and special groups.

Additionally, the SciEd Outreach and Education Specialist I will assist with the maintenance of Mesa Lab exhibits, educational materials, and physical spaces (such as the classroom and storage areas), and apply best practices in science education and communication in all aspects of this position.

At UCAR, you will work alongside a dedicated team of professionals conducting critical research and community outreach to solve complex Earth system science problems including climate change, air pollution, extreme weather, floods, drought, wildfires, and space weather, all with the goal of improving human life and reducing economic loss. Hiring Salary Range:
$20.75/hour - $25.95/hour

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT AT UCAR
Here is a brief outline of what one would expect to be responsible for in this role.
Key Responsibilities
Plans and facilitates in-person and virtual education programming
  • Delivers in-person public tours and PreK-12 school field trips.
  • Delivers virtual educational programming for preK-12 and adult audiences, using a variety of platforms and technologies.
  • Engages in ongoing efforts to stay current on STEM education practices, Earth system science research (particularly UCAR|NCAR science), and best practices in science communication.
  • Participates in regular processes of self, peer, and programmatic evaluation with the SPP team to ensure best practices in classroom management and educational approaches.
Assists with planning and implementation of public outreach events
  • Works with staff from SPP, SciEd, and/or other labs and programs to plan and deliver outreach content and activities to a variety of audiences at public events such as festivals, workshops, community events, and conferences.
Other SciEd and School & Public Programs tasks
  • Assists with the maintenance of Mesa Lab exhibits, educational materials and physical spaces such as the classroom and storage areas.
WHO WE’D LOVE TO JOIN OUR TEAM
Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria:
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant academic discipline (STEM, education, communication, or interpretation field);
  • 3 years of relevant experience with formal K-12 or informal education in STEM disciplines;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of K-12 education in-person and/or virtual classroom management strategies and educational approaches that engage all learners and foster an optimal learning environment and experience.
  • Knowledge of STEM content, especially related to NCAR|UCAR and Earth system science, and an ability to convey that knowledge to a wide variety of audiences through educational programming.
  • Basic skill with common virtual/online educational programming platforms, best practices, and technology, and adept at learning new technologies and platforms.
  • Familiarity with the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and an ability to work effectively with the diverse needs and abilities of colleagues, students, and the general public.
  • Strong interpersonal teamwork, and communication skills.
  • Available to work occasional evenings and weekends (1-4 per month) and for occasional travel.
