Description

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide for the safe street crossing for students; direct automotive and pedestrian traffic at a school intersection to assist elementary children cross streets safely as they travel to and from school.

Examples of Duties

Direct automotive and pedestrian traffic at a school intersection; assist elementary children to cross street safely to and from school.

Watch traffic at all times when on duty; look both ways before entering roadway and at a recognizable gap in traffic, walk to center of intersection with sign elevated; stand in center of roadway with sign prominently displayed to stop all traffic and signal children to cross; remain in center of roadway until all children have crossed to the curb, then return to curb.

Instruct children as to the methods and times when crossing is safe; instruct children to walk bicycles across the street.

Cooperate with school authorities in traffic safety programs.

Report to supervisor motorists who violate law and interfere with crossing guard's control of intersection; report suspicious persons to supervisor and provide a description of person; report uncooperative children to school principal as necessary.

Notify supervisor immediately if anyone is injured at intersection.

Maintain appropriate time records and submit to appropriate personnel as directed; keep emergency phone numbers available to contact proper person in case of accident or a need to contact supervisor.

Wear regulation vest or jacket, arm band identification and carry stop sign while on duty.

Rules of the Hayward Police Department traffic bureau regarding crossing of children at intersections.

Oral and written communication skills.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:

Speak English clearly and distinctly.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents and others.

Work independently with little direction.

Meet schedules and time lines.

Work different hours on minimum school days.

Carry regulation sign and wear vest or jacket and Hayward School identification patch while on duty.

Attend training sessions for crossing guards.

Work outdoors in local weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Seeing to direct the safe crossing at intersections with and without a signal and depth perception to judge approaching vehicle's closeness to intersection.

Standing for extended periods of time.

Possess arm strength to hold sign up so that it can be seen by approaching traffic.

Dexterity of hands and fingers to hold stop sign.

HAZARDS:

Traffic hazards.

Working during inclement weather.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Positions in this job classification typically work 10 hours/week (one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon) for 180 student instructional days.

The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission.

Hayward Unified School District does not pay for employee health and welfare benefits. Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. Health benefit costs are 100% employee paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction. Employees may opt out of health coverage upon presentation of proof of alternate coverage. Dental coverage is mandatory for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more, regardless of outside coverage. Less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis.
