Safety Coordinator Job at Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District
Acts as a safety champion to consistently communicate, promote and improve workplace safety at the District. Under direction, performs work of considerable difficulty in developing, conducting and implementing District wide Safety Program activities, to include accident/injury investigations, site safety inspections, training, and other safety related activities.
Essential Functions: Develops and implements safety programs for both General Industry (OSHA 1910) and Construction Industry (OSHA 1926) related activities which control loss exposures and prevent their occurrence; conducts safety audits and communicates results for various District facilities; develops/improves safety job plans for specific applications; assists in developing and maintaining statistical safety reports; develops, conducts and coordinates District safety training programs. Inspects active work/job sites for compliance with MSD Safety Program, Health & Safety Manual, safety job plans and best practices; performs field corrections for active job sites and coordinates further corrective action with supervisory staff; investigates accidents, injuries and near-misses; provides detailed reports of findings with supervisory staff and identifies root cause, develops and presents additional training to aid in future accident and injury mitigation. Provides guidance to operational staff regarding all aspects of safety best practices including trenching/shoring, work zone traffic control, confined space, fall protection and electrical safety i.e., arc flash and lock out/tag out; Performs safety presentations, inspects and manages safety equipment to ensure proper performance, i.e. fall protection harnesses, gas monitors, winches, hoisting devices and tripods. Manages and coordinates communication systems such as handheld radios and intercoms. Point of contact for hazardous waste handling. Maintains emergency response protocols for various District facilities. Participates in monthly safety committee meetings and weekly operational staff planning meetings. Occasionally provided support for emergencies outside of normal work hours.
Additional Responsibilities: Perform related work as required or as delegated by supervisor.
Training and Experience: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in safety, industrial hygiene, loss prevention or other related field and two years’ experience in conducting corporate or business based investigations involving safety related matters of a sensitive nature.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of safety related investigations; considerable knowledge of accident prevention methods and procedures; knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety standards and industrial hygiene standards that apply in an industrial workplace; must have working knowledge of both construction and/or general industry safety practices, to include confined space and fall protection, trenching and shoring, work zone traffic control, electrical safety i.e. arc flash and lock out/tag out processes and procedures; considerable skill in analyzing and preparing investigative reports; knowledge and ability to use basic computer software programs; considerable skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others; considerable skills in communicating effectively both orally and written.
Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Preferred
Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state in which the employee resides. Must be able to provide transportation for field work.
Pursuant to MSD's "Substance Abuse Policy and Procedures," this position has been designated as safety sensitive and candidate must pass a Non-D.O.T. Drug Test for this position. Employees occupying this position are not subject to Federal (D.O.T.) Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations.
