Information Systems Technician

The Information System Technician is responsible for ensuring continual operation and support of shipboard technology systems. The Technician is responsible for regional ships to manage and support electronics and information systems. The Technician is responsible for providing an immediate response for repairs to ensure the vessel remains on schedule and meeting passenger and crew expectations.

The Information System Technician will be familiar with vessel navigation electronics, radios, satellite internet, Wi-Fi, IP phones, satellite phones, mobile phones, PA systems, sound systems, IPTV Systems, fire detection systems, network equipment, laptops, printers, and other systems. The Technician may be first on scene to troubleshoot or repair equipment.

The Information Systems Technician will work closely with the shoreside Information Systems department and Engineering Department to support the ships Hotel and Marine Operations.

This position requires frequent travel and reports directly to the Information Systems Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists and supports the Hotel and Marine Operations Departments of each ship in their area of responsibility.
  • Manages and solves technical problems quickly.
  • Identifies and troubleshoots technical vessel problems and provides fast solutions to minimize downtime.
  • Fixes equipment and troubleshoots maintenance requests.
  • Installs new equipment.
  • Manages inventory of critical spares.
  • On-scene and on-call for repairs.
  • Coordinates and ensures projects and repairs are completed to specifications.
  • Provides technical information to provide network connection to Engineering Systems.
  • Installs and updates network system improvements.
  • Installs and configures wireless networking equipment.
  • Monitors servers, Internet Systems, and Wi-Fi to ensure full coverage.
  • Assists with the design, implementation, and support of new software and features.
  • Evaluates connectivity issues, equipment, and software and hardware.
  • Assists with set-up of equipment for new users and employees.
  • Consults with vendors and clients to integrate and update company technology.
  • Ensures system optimization for all technology resources.
  • Completes basic low voltage electrical wiring, networking, programming, and AV equipment rack installation.
  • Supports laptops, printers (including mapping), and phones.
  • Monitors ship systems to ensure maximum uptime and seamless use by ship personnel.
  • Performs data transfer between corporate and shipside systems.
  • Coordinates 3rd party IT system vendors.
  • Manages and evaluates performance of contractors and vendors.
  • Assists with installation of systems on new construction of ships.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

  • Ability to work on various computer programs and networked systems.
  • Ability to learn and take directions from port engineers and IT management.
  • Experience with Security Camera Systems and Gangway key-card systems experience.
  • Card key, video surveillance, and PA system support.

Licenses and Registrations

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Possess a Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card).

Education and Experience

  • Two years of experience as information system technician.
  • CCTV installation & access control.
  • Audio Visual / Public Address System background.
  • A+, Network+, Security+, and Microsoft OS proficient.
  • Knowledge of Windows operating systems, computer and peripheral hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of UHF and VHF radios.
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to interact well with diverse end-users and technical staff are required.
  • Individual must be detail-oriented and able to independently resolve technology problems.

Typical Work Environments:

  • This position includes frequent travel to ships.
  • Frequently underway time ships.

Additional Requirements:

  • Subject to a background investigation.
  • Subject to a pre-employment physical.
  • Ability to frequently traverse stairs, fixed ladders and ladder-wells while walking ships on a daily basis.
  • Capable of sitting for long periods of time, standing, walking, crouching, and kneeling.
  • Reaching, handling, using equipment, keyboards, and mobile devices.
  • Lifting and installing technology equipment.
