The Role of Resident Teacher at PPN

As a Resident Teacher at Public Preparatory Network, you will have an opportunity to begin on a journey of laying the foundation of your career as an educator. The residency, a partnership between Relay Graduate School of Education (Relay GSE) and Public Preparatory Network, is designed specifically for recent college graduates and career changers who are looking for an innovative pathway into the teaching profession. The program is designed to marry the two worlds of pedagogy theory and real practice in the classroom. You will be at the center of the work, learning just as much and just as hard as the scholars that we serve. Because we deeply believe in each and every one of our students, the Resident Teacher will have high expectations of themselves, their studies, and of the scholars in our schools.

Primary Function & Position Overview

Under the direction of a Mentor Teacher, the Resident Teacher gains instructional experience as part of the Relay Teacher ResidencyProgram which leads to their New York State Teaching Certificate and Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree. This instructional experience is gained by providing instructional support with curriculum delivery and classroom management.

As their experience develops, the Resident Teacher will be called upon to cover duties, including, but not limited to, implementing full class lesson plans, managing student behavior, proctoring lunch and recess, transitioning students from one location to another, and assisting with administrative tasks, as necessary.

The Resident Teacher will report to the Academic Director or Principal and will work closely with their Mentor Teacher, grade team, and department to ensure equitable outcomes for all scholars in their care.

Duties and Responsibilities

    • Support outstanding academic achievement and students’ personal development
    • Create a positive, achievement-oriented and structured learning environment that excites and invests students as they reach their full potential.
    • Build classroom community and relationships with families, participating in a powerful team that ensures all students make outstanding academic progress.
    • Support individual students through one-on-one tutoring or small group instruction
    • Support lead teachers in one or more subject with grading, preparation of class materials and classroom management- taking on more teaching responsibility throughout the year as appropriate
    • Assist the lead teacher in running a structured homeroom in the morning and serve as an advisor to 5-10 students
    • Provide substitute teaching coverage (as needed) when teachers are out of the building
    • Collaborate with Resident Advisor (supervisor) to evaluate and improve mastery of instruction, culture building, and leadership skills
    • Attend weekly teacher in residence professional development, team planning and data analysis meetings, and informal learning and development opportunities, in support of constant growth.
    • Observe high-performing teachers throughout the school
    • Complete Deliberate Practice pre-work to sharpen your pedagogical knowledge prior to practice

Qualifications

    • Desire to support elementary appropriate social, emotional and cognitive development
    • Excited to tackle the challenging work of supporting a classroom inclusive or learning experiences that balance academic rigor and developmentally appropriate practices
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a GPA of at least 3.0.
    • Degree must be completed by the start date.
    • If your GPA is between 2.75 and 3.0, you may submit additional recommendations to be considered for employment and enrollment with Relay.
    • Experience working with youth in a structured academic or youth development setting in a supervisory capacity, preferred
    • Commitment to work from a social-emotional, strength based and/or youth development perspective
    • Interest in single-sex education and pursuing careers in education, highly preferred
    • Desire to commit to Public Preparatory Network for at least 2 years beyond graduation from the Residency Program.

Residents Will Earn

    • A state teaching certification in New York, residents receive a New York Initial Certificate and Master of Arts in Teaching from Relay GSE (2 years of coursework)
    • Residents also have the option of completing a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Year 2.
