What You Will Do

The Computational Earth Science Group in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has an open Research Technologist 1 position related to numerical modeling and data analysis for wildland fire research. This Research Technologist will provide technical, operational and project management support for multiple fire-related research projects in the Group. Tasks will include some or all the following: testing and development of numerical wildfire models, data analyses (for example, of wind events or vegetation distribution) and data management, GIS analysis and mapping, visualization, statistical analysis, project administration, and preparing technical reports. Los Alamos National Laboratory solves problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns, and enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile.

The Research Technologist will participate in creating and presenting research at technical conferences and program meetings and will contribute to the development of technical reports and manuscripts for submission to high-impact journals.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Experience in both compiled (Fortran, C, etc.) and interpreted programming languages (Python, R, etc.)
  • Strong technical communication skills, as demonstrated by technical presentations, reports, and/or scientific publications
  • Demonstrated ability to work creatively and independently in collaboration with large interdisciplinary and diverse research teams

Education/Experience: A Bachelor's degree in a STEM field and 2 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with managing and archiving data
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization tools
  • Geospatial analysis and mapping skills using ArcGIS or QGIS, or equivalent program
  • Experience in providing support to project management
  • Experience with wildfire or earth system models
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship
  • Master's degree in a STEM field

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
