Position Title: Religious Education Coordinator,Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico

Summary

The Religious Education Coordinator provides support to the Religious Support Office (RSO), Chaplains, Directors of Religious Education (DREs) and Religious Affairs Specialists for Department of the Army (DA), providing comprehensive religious education programs which run concurrently with the traditional academic year (AY), and facilitate ecumenical activities in consultation with the Catholic Priest and/or Protestant Chaplain, and Director of Religious Education (DRE) i.e., a one (1) week Vacation Bible School (VBS), picnics, year round Youth of the Chapel programs, retreats, etc.in collaboration with Chaplains, Religious Affairs Specialists, Directors of Religious Education, Volunteers, other Chapel Contractors, and Civilian workforce.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Catholic/Protestant Religious Education Coordination

  • Support Catholic/Protestant/DRE Religious Education services by coordinating with the Catholic/Protestant Community to assist with the implementation of RE programs, goals, policies, and procedures for all US Army Garrison Fort Buchanan Community programs for children and adults. These programs include:
  • Catechist training
  • Sacramental program (First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation)
  • Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
  • Sunday and Mid-week RE classes
  • Submission of Protestant Religious Education curriculum requests to Protestant Chaplin and/or DRE.
  • Parent and teacher training
  • Seasonal programs (Christmas Pageant, Stations of the Cross, and Vacation Bible School).
  • Assist with Development of the annual RE Calendar of events and CTOF budget to presented for Chaplain Approval.
  • Perform administrative tasks necessary to begin program in September (Reserve facilities, recruit teachers, publicize, etc.)
  • Assist with recruiting a minimum of 2 Teacher Training sessions coordinated with Catholic Priest and/or Garrison Chaplain to inaugurate the school year and 1 Teacher Training session per quarter.
  • Submit all facility, funds, and material requests to the Garrison/Protestant Chaplain for approval, coordination, and processing.
  • Attends weekly meetings with the Garrison/Protestant Chaplain and Chapel Staff in addition to attending Pastoral Council meetings (as a nonvoting member).
  • The Religious Education Coordinator must be familiar with appropriate RE Coordinator resources such as books, references materials, resource videos, magazines, and crafts.
  • Oversees inventory stocks and maintains all RE Coordinator materials along with submitting requests for curriculum and supplies for succeeding quarters.
  • Track monthly attendance using spreadsheets and submit to Catholic Priest/Protestant Chaplin and/or Garrison Chaplain, along with providing metrics to Chapel staff as needed.
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of volunteer dedication and recognition programs.
  • Coordinate with the Garrison/Protestant Chaplain and Catholic Priest to collect background check forms from all personnel in the Catholic and Protestant programs having direct contact with children under the age of 18 years.
  • Ensure RE Coordinator programs and activities are properly monitored and be able to address any behavioral problems professionally.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Demonstrate a familiarity with and a commitment to support the practice of the Catholic Faith as articulated by the documents of the Second Vatican Council and the subsequent statements of the American Conference of Catholic Bishops.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the Protestant Faith and a commitment to support the Protestant Faith programs. Must provide a resume and references validating education and experience requirements listed above.
  • Teaching experience and excellent organization and planning skills.
  • Have basic word-processing skills.
  • Experience working in a military environment is preferred.
  • Religious Education Coordinator must be willing to work in a pluralistic environment where they may encounter members from various faith groups and/or viewpoints. Contractor will be professional and not denigrate individuals with a different religious perspective or viewpoint
  • Religious Education Coordinator must behave in a professional manner befitting US military religious support activities and demonstrate dignity and respect, keeping in harmony with the values and norms of the Army Chaplain Corps, in addition refraining from using offensive language such as swearing, cursing, disparaging language, and other such communications.
  • In accordance with Department of Defense Instruction (DODI) 1402.5, individuals working with children under the age of 18 in conjunction with this contract must successfully complete the criminal history background check.

Education and/or Experience

  • High School
  • Military experience preferred, but not required.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • At least two years of computer, internet, and Social Media skills.
  • At least two years working as a Religious Education Coordinator.

Salary based upon experience.
