GENERAL SUMMARY
The Registered Nurse coordinates, directs, delegates, and provides resident care using care plans, and collaborates with the inter-disciplinary team to plan, implement, and evaluate resident care objectives. Provides patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by law and regulation. The RN is responsible to provide a safe, efficient, and therapeutically effective care environment which ensures the self-respect, personal dignity, rights, and physical safety of each resident.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administers peripheral, PICC and central line IV. (intravenous) fluids. Monitors intravenous sites, starts, peripheral IV’s only but discontinues peripheral and PICC IV’s only.
  • Assists in evaluating the job performance of subordinate personnel and recommends counseling, discipline or retraining of those personnel to the Unit Manager or Director of Nursing.
  • Assists in the admission and discharge of residents.
  • Communicates with the Director of Nursing/Unit Manager or nurse in charge and CNA's regarding status of residents and unit needs.
  • Documents and maintains records and reports regarding nursing care, resident condition, medications given, and treatments administered.
  • Gives and receives report.
  • Inserts and monitors gastrostomy tubes and administers feedings.
  • Inserts, cares for, and monitors supra pubic and indwelling foley catheters.
  • Makes resident rounds and evaluates resident condition and quality of resident care rendered by CNA's.
  • May serve as the nurse in charge in Unit Manager absence.
  • Orients and directs assigned licensed and non-licensed personnel.
  • Participates in the interdisciplinary care planning process for individual residents and in resident care conferences.
  • Provides direct resident care including administering medications and performing complex and routine treatments, observing, and evaluating resident symptoms and reactions to treatments and initiates corrective action as needed.
  • Provides tracheostomy care, changes dressings and suctions when needed. Changes tracheostomy tubes as ordered.
  • Serves as team leader for assigned group of CNAs.
  • All other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Licensure: Registered nurse in the state of Michigan.
  • Education: Associates degree in nursing is required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Ability to recognize subtle changes in resident condition.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to work effectively under time requirements and deadlines, problem-solve when facing unexpected issues, handle interruptions, and prioritize effectively.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Previous experience, in a rehabilitation or acute care setting is preferred but not required.
  • Strong critical thinking, decision-making, delegation, and leadership skills.
  • Time management and organizational skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to lift up to seventy-five (75) pounds.
  • Ability to transfer residents weighing up to three hundred (300) pounds or more.
  • Push/pull wheeled carts and chairs weighing up to three hundred (300) pounds or more.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works in resident rooms and at the unit nursing station with exposure to noise and unpleasant odors.
  • Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious diseases.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Unpredictable mealtimes: breaks are scheduled around resident care needs.
