U.S. Senator Tim Kaine’s NORTHEASTERN VIRGINIA Regional Office, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, is in search of a Regional Director. This regional office serves the cities of Alexandria and Fredericksburg, and Arlington, Prince William, Stafford, Culpeper, Madison, Green, Orange, Spotsylvania, King George, Caroline, Westmoreland, Essex, Richmond, Northumberland and Lancaster counties. The Regional Director is a mid-level position that reports to the State Director.

Duties will vary over time but generally include:

  • Outreach
  • Set the strategy, plan and coordinate outreach, including initiating and building relationships with community leaders across sectors. The Regional Director is expected to learn and be knowledgeable of issues in the assigned area, particularly issues impacted by the federal government or federal policies. They are the principal liaison between the Senator and local governments, businesses, and community leaders. The Regional Director will serve as the Senator’s principal advisor on local issues.
  • Serve as the Senator’s representative at meetings and events in the community.
  • Staff and coordinate the Senator’s travel when he is in the region.
  • Constituent Services – the Regional Director ensures that calls and walk-ins are handled in a professional, informed, and polite manner and that constituents are helped to the best of our ability. Additionally, the Regional Director ensures that all written communications are accurate, timely, and reflect Senator Kaine’s standards.
  • Casework – the Regional Director manages an assigned portfolio of federal agencies and manages constituent casework with those agencies on a statewide basis. They are expected to analyze their portfolios for trends and policy initiatives and brief the Senator and other staff members with recommendations. Portfolio assignments are determined by the Casework Director and may be adjusted from time to time.
  • Office management – the Regional Director manages the telephone system, interface with building management and security services, order supplies, recruit, trains and supervises interns, as well as supervises the Regional Staff Assistant.
  • Greetings – the Regional Director will write, produce, and distribute a portfolio of constituent correspondence as needed.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, and excellent managing skills. This person should be poised, polished, and courteous in interactions with constituents and colleagues. Strong administrative and organizational skills are a MUST. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint) and the ability to learn and operate the constituent service system (VOICE) and a multi-line telephone system are required. A working knowledge of federal, state, and local government is desirable. Compensation determined by experience.
