PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under broad supervision, sorts recyclables and removes unaccepted material from the waste stream to meet quality control metrics. Performs general cleaning and organization to contribute to overall efficient operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sorts recyclables and removes unacceptable material from the recycling stream delivered to the facility.
  • Communicates to lead and/or supervisor if equipment is not properly functioning or handling the inbound material.
  • Sorts and transports salvage items to designated areas. · Adheres to facility cleanliness, organizational systems, and facility standard work procedures while maintaining a vision for continuous improvement.
  • Understands the EMS policy and what it means to Metro Waste Authority. Understands how position and job responsibilities impact the environment and what can be done to improve them. Recommends improvements through the Suggestion Box or to the EMS Core Team or the Metro Waste Authority Management Team in cases where the authority does not reside within this position to make improvements.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of Metro Waste Authority’s values (Leadership, Integrity, Positivity, Teamwork, and Innovation) and applies them to the position, and assigned responsibilities, as well as to all interactions with customers and co-workers.
  • Performs other special projects, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • CPR/First-Aid Certification preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Regularly required to use hands to handle material, as well as talk and listen to peers and supervisors. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and smell or taste. ·
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must follow safety protocols for lifting more than 50 pounds, including but not limited to team lifting techniques.
  • Regularly required to utilize personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hard hat, safety shoes, hearing protection, gloves, and protective clothing.
  • Requires good spatial perception and manual dexterity.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees and customers to deliver instructions and resolve issues.
  • Ability to learn and follow safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate own actions with those of other workers/operators on a busy site.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to operate general tools.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY

  • Frequently required to perform work outdoors year-round with exposures to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
  • Routine exposure to vibration and loud background noise.
  • Frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; work in high, precarious places; risk of electric shock; and extreme heat (non-weather).
  • Occasional non-regular work hours, which may include nights and weekends.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
