The Hope Concrete Company & City Concrete Company is looking for an experienced, highly qualified teammate for the Plant Operator and Truck Dispatch position. This role is primarily responsible for operating a concrete batch plant coordinating the timely delivery of concrete from plant locations to job sites according to customer requests and expectations while using the most efficient and cost-effective processes possible. This position involves dispatching of company trucks, and coordinating with other plant locations to economize use of company resources. In addition, the Plant Operator controls the process to produce concrete from raw ingredients and additives according to predetermined specifications using computer batching software. Verifies correct admixtures are used in correct dosages and provides verification that the concrete batched meets the specifications established by company and customer. This position requires day to day interaction with other employees.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Customer Service:

  • Receives customer order from customer, usually via telephone call
  • Effectively communicates with customer for information to determine proper quantity, mix, delivery time and job site location for each order. Also makes note of any special or unusual customer requests
  • Suggests value-added products to customers to enhance product performance based on the nature of the customer’s job
  • Enters the customer order timely, accurately and completely into the dispatch system
  • Advises customer of any potential issues/concerns regarding product order such as load limits, scheduling conflicts, vehicle weight limitations, etc.

Dispatching:

  • Schedules mixer trucks to ensure maximum utilization and efficiency while meeting the needs and expectations of customers
  • Generates accurate and complete delivery tickets to the plant manager in a timely manner
  • Communicates with mixer drivers, plant superintendents, other plant operators/ dispatchers, and office workers on a frequent and regular basis to avoid or address issues, concerns or problems
  • Monitors mixer truck status on a constant basis to ensure customer satisfaction and maximum equipment and labor utilization
  • Works to ensure drivers are in compliance with local, state and federal DOT guidelines and regulations
  • Works closely with other company offices to move equipment and people to meet customer demands.
  • Adjusts dispatch schedule as needed to reflect current and accurate information
  • Communicates with plant superintendent daily to advise of mixer driver start and finish times

Plant Operating Responsibilities:

  • Efficiently operates batching facilities and maintains maximum production levels.
  • Operates computer controlled batching system that transfers product from storage bins through weigh bins and into ready-mix trucks.
  • Record daily delivery statistics and daily maintenance activities.
  • Reads and interpret computer orders to control mix design and to set appropriate slump.
  • Uses computer to weigh product being transferred to each truck. Visually monitors control boards and computer screens.
  • Visually inspect loading trucks to assure proper positioning for delivery of product.
  • Prints tickets on computer or writes tickets by hand to be given to driver
  • Visually inspect concrete on as needed basis.
  • Files a copy of each ticket.
  • Records all daily record keeping and paperwork as required.
  • Maintains material inventories and orders materials as needed.
  • Inspects silo, weigh hoppers and plant and cleans hoppers as needed.
  • Climb stairs/ladders to top of cement mixer to manually add concrete fiber packets as needed.
  • Diagnose and assists in trouble-shooting when process is interrupted.
  • Demonstrates good understanding of lockout/tagout procedure required during certain procedures. Assists with cleanup as needed.
  • Assist in training of co-workers as needed.
  • Assigns and maintains raw material delivery tickets. Supply customers with accurate product and delivery information.
  • Accurately report on fuel, petty cash, time cards, etc.
  • Assist Plant Superintendent in balancing driver hours to assure equity and compliance with D.O.T. requirements.
  • Maintain an excellent personal safety record and a clean/safe work environment.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education/Specialized Knowledge/Professional Certifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Knowledge of geographic area where dispatching is strongly preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum three years of work experience required with construction or concrete industry experience preferred
  • Experience working with personal computer

Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work with basic mathematics to include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (including fractions)
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Ability to read and interpret maps and directions
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple competing tasks
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
