Project/Unit Description

This position will work in the Electronic Systems (ELSYS) Laboratory, Quality Assurance Group. The ELSYS QA Group provides quality engineering oversight of external research projects in all ELSYS Divisions and field offices to determine if the technical project meets or exceeds all requirements. This oversight is critical in sustaining the ISO 9001 quality standard certification of ELSYS's Quality Management System and in identifying continuous improvement opportunities.

Job Purpose

The Quality Assurance Engineer is part of an established team of experts in the assessment of quality management standards compliance, sustainment of organizational ISO 9001 Quality Management System certification, and determination of best practices for project management and product design and development. In this role, the Quality Assurance Engineer performs internal quality audits and project and product reviews to ensure sustainment of laboratory ISO 9001 certification and sponsor product quality. The QA Engineer also reviews and monitors work product planning, development, execution, and risk management activities to assess compliance with standards and processes. In addition, the QA Engineer analyzes and interprets quality assurance standards, industry, and government regulatory requirements, and determines compliant quality system processes, policies, and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform the successful completion of internal quality audits and project and product reviews of moderate scope to ensure product quality and sustainment of organizational ISO 9001 certification and report audit findings to management, project, and product teams.
• Analyze and interpret quality assurance standards and determine compliant quality system processes, policies, and procedures.
• Review and monitor work product planning, development, execution, and risk management activities to assess compliance with quality management standards and processes and ensure quality throughout product development and sustain organizational ISO 9001 certification.
• Investigate opportunities for improvement in the quality management system and product design and development processes and provide recommendations to management and internal working groups.
• Devise sampling procedures for collecting and analyzing quality data and develop quality assurance audit tools to assist in quality analysis of engineering processes and procedures.
• Coordinate mock audits and other activities to support on-site external audits and participate in external audits.

Additional Responsibilities

• Provide quality engineering oversight of external research projects of moderate scope utilizing research product development technical expertise to determine if the technical research project work meets technical project requirements and identify continuous improvement opportunities
• Contribute to quality assurance disciplines through authorship of refereed journal and symposium papers, invited conference presentations, or widely distributed reports
• Serve as task leader on audits, occasionally supervising another auditor
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Experience working with ISO 9001 standards, Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
• Experience in quality assurance, quality control, quality engineering, internal auditing, or software testing.
• Working knowledge of quality assurance methodologies and quality engineering and control techniques

Preferred Qualifications

• Active Secret Clearance
• Experience translating quality and regulatory standards to reliable and repeatable processes in a research and development environment (non-manufacturing environment)
• Experience with analyzing and understanding technical methodologies and systems in order to monitor and review project development and execution
