Summary The construction project manager position is responsible for representing the firm with clients and consultants on virtually any range of subjects related to construction and for making decisions on behalf of the firm.

Applicant must have experience in industrial, civil or structural construction, reading and interpreting civil/structural plans and construction specifications, cost containment and scheduling, possess analytical and critical thinking skills, be a detail oriented and a self-motivated team player, as well as have the ability to meet complex deadlines and work independently with minimal supervision. This position requires a person who can handle confidential information with discretion and trustworthiness. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.

Job Duties

Job duties encompass the five phases of project management and generally include the following:

  • Manage multiple construction projects;
  • Review, understand and enforce contractual requirements for construction projects;
  • Read and interpret contract documents including customer specifications and drawings, building codes, design standards, soils reports, contract terms and conditions, and contract addendums;
  • Conform the project budget, for accounting purposes, from the project estimate;
  • Develop and maintain the project schedule for all WBS phases;
  • Select and manage subcontractors for non-self-performed work;
  • Provide plan for and coordinate the activities of multiple departments and subcontractors and coordinate activities with general contractors to keep the project on schedule and within budget;
  • Travel to the jobs to meet with contractors, engineers, consultants and owners to discuss coordination, scope, or progress or to resolve issues;
  • Negotiate contract change orders;
  • Review and conduct analysis of potential changes to budget or schedule and develop mitigation plans to maintain project execution within budget and schedule;
  • Observe and report on construction process and construction related issues (field reports, job walks, etc.);
  • Monitor and manage financial aspects of the project including budgets, invoicing, cash flow, cost projections, and budget variances;
  • Maintain and follow-up on project open item lists;
  • Manage the project close out process to a successful completion;
  • Prepare documentation for analysis and review of specific issues;
  • Direct and/or document project meetings;
  • Special projects or assignments as required by company management;
  • Project managers use Excel, Word, scheduling software and company’s accounting software to manage work;
  • Maintain and promote the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a salaried full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 6:30 am to 5 pm. This position may involve up to 50 hour weeks during some periods. Due to the nature of the job, the employee must be available on-call early/late hours to deal with delays, bad weather and emergencies at the job site.

Travel

The employee may travel extensively when the construction site is not close to the main office or when responsible for activities at two or more sites.

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of three years’ related experience in tank building and/or project management
  • Project Management classes

Preferred Education and Experience * 3 years construction project management experience with project management training; or

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or Business and a minimum of 1 year construction project management experience.
