PURPOSE:

The Engineering department is seeking an experienced Mining Engineering to work as a Project Engineer with our Design team. Work will need to be completed in accordance with NNSS procedures and Department of Energy (DOE) requirements.
Responsibilities:
  • Participate in planning phases of projects to determine customer requirements during initial planning discussions.
  • Assist in developing design/construction concepts with the Project Manager, Project Engineer, Facility Management, Construction and support organizations.
  • Work with Cost Estimating to define construction practices and procedures.
  • Assist Cost Estimating with the incorporation of construction activities into the cost estimate, work breakdown structure and organizational breakdown structure.
  • Provide input during design activities on constructibility, preferred construction materials, and parts or items to be incorporated into the design.
  • Generate designs and oversee the construction planning for installation of underground mining, ground support, ventilation, grout plans, ground movement monitoring, bracing, etc. This includes permitting activities and oversight of material takeoffs from final approved design documents as well as procurement of parts or items that can meet the required design specifications and delivery requirements.
  • Generate design calculations, drawings, specifications, mining plans, and coordination studies.
  • Devise solutions to highly complex technical problems of broad scope. Solutions may require resolving conflicting customer expectations and design requirements, utilizing unconventional technology and materials, and cross-disciplinary integration.
  • Interpret and adapt guidelines for specific projects.
  • Review proposed changes to ensure the intent of the design is maintained during construction activities.
  • Evaluate processes, procedures, and work instructions to improve performance.
  • Prepare work statements for complex subcontracts and procurements, evaluate bids and make recommendation for awards.
  • Provide expertise on operational goals.
Qualifications:

Due to the nature of our work, US Citizenship is required for all positions.


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees;
    • Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering;
    • Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB);
    • Or Professional Engineer license.
  • Plus at least 9 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • Ability to interpret codes and standards applicable to the position.

Additional Requirements

  • Knowledge of Vulcan and/or Flac-3D is preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to work in remote locations and in unusual environments such as underground tunnels where construction, maintenance, and operations activities are constantly ongoing.
  • Possess planning and organizational skills and the ability to take initiative.
  • Ability to employ independent judgment and apply professional knowledge to ensure that assignments are completed efficiently and on time.
  • Possess interpersonal communication skills to interact in an effective, positive, and professional manner.
  • Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • The primary work location will be at the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.

  • Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Applicant selected will be subject to a federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”
  • Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”
