Job Summary

This position is funded federally, therefore, as mandated by the federal government, city employees in this position must be fully vaccinated at the time of hire and must be able to provide proof of vaccination status prior to their date of hire.

This position will be involved in providing quality care for children enrolled in The City of Lakewood Early Childhood Programs. Assists in maintaining a safe, clean, nurturing and supportive environment. Assists with implementing developmentally appropriate programming; interacts with parents as needed; assists supervisor with special projects as assigned and maintains the classroom in the absence of the pre-school teacher. Knowledge of and ability to enter data into Teaching Strategies® GOLD and Child Plus online systems will be required.

Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities

Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion. Employees must be able to perform the essential duties of this job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Assist in maintaining a positive and nurturing physical and emotional environment in the classroom.
  • Helps with lesson planning and implementation into the classroom routine.
  • Participates in the classroom by planning and implementing small groups on a regular basis.
  • Actively participate in and monitor children’s play indoors and outdoors.
  • Promote and reinforce children’s oral communication. Communicate with children at their physical level.
  • Enforce established classroom rules and limits for behavior consistently and calmly.
  • Follow classroom procedures for health and safety.
  • Maintains complete confidentiality regarding student, family, and staff information.
  • Follow procedure for reporting suspected child abuse.
  • Follow site procedures for maintenance and security at the beginning and end of each day.
  • Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner.
  • Requires regular and prompt attendance.

Essential Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Early Childhood Education or related degree OR

An unrelated bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with 2 3-semester credit hour ECE courses, one of which must be either ECE 101 or Guidance Strategies or the Department approved Pyramid Plus Training OR

A two-year college degree in child development or early childhood education from an accredited college or university which must include at least two (2) 3-semester credit hour courses one of which must be either ECE 101 or Guidance Strategies or the Department approved Pyramid Plus Training OR

Current certification as a Child Development Associate (CDA) or Certified Childcare Professional (CCP) or another Department approved credential OR

Completion of 18 semester credit hours in college-level credits in Early Childhood, one of which must be either ECE 101 or Guidance Strategies or the Department approved Pyramid Plus Training, plus 3 months (455 hours) of verified experience in the care and supervision of 4 or more children less than 8 years of age who are not related to the individual OR

A current Colorado Level I Early Childhood Credential 3.0 OR 2 3-semester credit hour college courses one of which must be ECE 101 or Guidance Strategies or the Department approved Pyramid Plus Training, plus 21 months (3,185 hours) of verified experience in the care and supervision of 4 or more children less than 8 years of age who are not related to the individual.

Certification/Licenses/Specialized Training

  • Current certification in CPR/First Aid
  • Must meet State requirements for Early Childhood Teacher

KSA's and Physical/Mental Reqs

  • Knowledge of NAEYC’s Developmentally Appropriate Practices
  • Knowledge of Department of Human Services Child Care Rules and Regulations for childcare centers
  • Must be able to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to work effectively with children
  • Ability to remain calm during crisis situations
  • Acceptance of diversity and ability to work comfortably with the public
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Current physical exam and tuberculosis test results required, per Colorado Licensing Rules and Regulations.
  • Criminal background check, fingerprint check and an FBI background check are required.

Working in a safe manner includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and complying with all City and/or Department safety rules. Horseplay on-the-job is strictly forbidden. The failure to work in a safe manner, use PPE, follow standard operating procedure or comply with a safety rule will result adverse employment consequences ranging from verbal discipline to termination from employment, including any applicable reduction in benefits under the Colorado Workers’ Compensation Act. Employees are also expected to encourage safe work practices by all co-employees, and to report any unsafe work practices immediately to a supervisor.

Our pension fund is a social security replacement, money purchase plan. Mandatory employee contribution is 11% of gross base salary; city contribution is 13% of gross base salary.

SICK LEAVE
Full-time employees earn 8 hours per month. Part-time employees earn 6 hours per month.

VACATION
Full-time employees with less than five years of service earn 8 hours per month. Part-time employees with less than five years of service earn 6 hours per month.
