Job Overview:
SoCalGas is looking for a well-rounded and organized individual who has an aptitude for detail and will have Construction/Planning and AutoCAD experience within our Planning Department. With pay starting at $41.93 /hr. up to $46.68 /hr. over a two-year progression, we are offering the right candidate an opportunity providing you with training to become a safe and efficient Pipeline Planning Assistant; skills that will prepare you for a career with SoCalGas. Current opening is at our location in Chatsworth. This is a DOT position.

Position Objective:
Performs a wide range of tasks related to pipeline construction planning. Provides office and field support and assistance in pipeline construction planning. Analyzes and interprets various types of engineering and construction drawings. Uses computer drafting design software to prepare construction, completion drawings and posting to Company maps.

Job Duties include and Responsibilities:
Performs duties to Company Gas Standards, guidelines and established safety procedures. Performs various administrative support functions.

Assists with developing surveys or studies and subsequent reports on subjects such as lease agreements, pipeline footages, pipe requirements, leak data, street vacations, city annexations, and possible involvement with outside construction.

On some assignments, reviews main installation and replacement projects to determine easement requirements, researches public records to determine legal owner(s), prepares right-of-way descriptions and drawings based on written descriptions and parcel maps. Prepares and interprets legal descriptions, secures signature of legal owners(s) and records documents with appropriate agencies.

Maintains tap records, pipeline footage’s and related files. Maintains pipeline summary records and submits updates when requested.

On some assignments, prepares Underground Service Alert notices for construction

On some assignments, processes material ordering documents and assists in the reconciliation of projects

Assists higher level planning personnel in taking measurements, determining pipeline location, and setting up and operating land survey equipment.

Uses computer design software to prepare pipeline construction and completion drawings and to update Company maps. This also includes verification of facility details with field personnel for posting of facilities into the Company mapping system.

Maintains files for correspondence, reports, work order projects, mapping documents, city annexations, and rights-of-way. Coordinates revisions to mapping documents.

On some assignments, maintains liaison with legal agencies and outside engineering firms. May act as a Point of Contact for collecting electronic data and provides required information to mapping services.

Prepares written reports and documentation utilizing spreadsheet and word processing programs. Effectively completes related paperwork, forms, and documentation.

Extracts information from and inputs data into both mainframe and computer systems.

Responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of Company vehicles and equipment.

Assists other work groups as needed and handles multiple demands.

Performs various other equivalent or lower grade functions.

On some assignments, compiles and evaluates data for pipeline replacement project.

Contacts

Frequent contacts include both Company and external personnel such as vendors, property owners or their representatives, governmental agencies, Underground Service Alert users, other planning personnel, supervisors, field crews, etc. Must communicate clearly and effectively in person, via computer, telephone and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test if a new hire or moving from a non-safety sensitive job.
  • All incumbents are subject to participation in the Company’s random drug testing program.
  • Must have performed in a Construction role to include Pipeline Planning and/or have GIS/AutoCAD experience.
  • Must successfully complete formalized training.
  • Must successfully demonstrate (in a structured interview) knowledge of: pipeline materials, field practices and procedures, pipeline record keeping and gas operations.
  • Must demonstrate ability to operate personal and/or mainframe computers, associated applications, and peripheral equipment. Must pass a pre-qualification test examination: ModernHire Operations & Support Assessment; No Physical Abilities test is required.
Desired Qualifications

Vocational training in surveying or CAD systems. Knowledge of computer aided design tools/software.

Other

Must be available for emergency call outs and be able to work occasional extensive hours.

Physical Demands

Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds with lifting up to approximately 20 pounds, as required. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job in this category requires walking or standing to a significant degree, or may involve sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. Certain functions of this job may require some physical strength and endurance needed to effectively and safely perform.

Environmental Conditions

Works both indoors and outdoors. Indoor assignments are in a typical office setting with no regular physical discomfort due to temperature, noise or dust. Outside assignments provide exposure to all of the above including exposure to construction equipment, street traffic, normal driving hazards. May require extensive driving and/or overnight stays.

Equipment

Operates personal and mainframe computers, applications, and associated peripheral equipment, as well as other types of office equipment. On some assignments, uses land survey and field measurement equipment and drafting tools.
