POSITION PURPOSE

• Performs venipunctures, gives patients instructions in order to properly collect non-blood specimens and performs non-technical and clerical functions related to specimen collection.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

• High School or Equivalent (GED)

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

• Valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Wisconsin and/or Illinois based on job assignment location.

• KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
• Ability to read, write, hear, speak and comprehend the English language.

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Collection of blood specimens from various patient types (inpatient, outpatient, nursing home patients and home-bound patients) using defined venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques. Assists nursing staff with blood specimen collection from indwelling lines/catheters. Status recording of the collection date and time in the Laboratory Information System.
• Instruction of patients in the collection of non-blood specimens.
• Clear communication with patients, physicians and fellow employees.
• Receives and records verbal orders from licensed independent practitioners for orders that are specific to the services provided by their department.
• Maintenance of the assigned work area, including disinfection and stocking supplies. #cb
