JOB TITLE: PHLEBOTOMIST (Level I)

REPORT TO: LABORATORY MANAGER

BASIC FUNCTION: To maintain a professional demeanor while attending to the needs of the customers at the Innercare Laboratory with focus on patient excellence; collecting patient samples for testing with the focus on positive patient identification

BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS EXPOSURE: HIGH RISK

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: The duties recorded below are intended to accurately represent the duties of the job and are not intended to cover every single duty of the job.

  • Perform daily/monthly controls and documentation to ensure accuracy of all laboratory waived instruments
  • Performs venipuncture and/or capillary punctures on patients of all age ranges (infant, adolescent, adult, and geriatric)
  • Vacutainer holder
  • Syringe
  • Butterfly
  • Lancet
  • Collection of throat swabs, nasal swabs, nasopharyngeal swabs, urine samples, blood samples, cultures, etc.
  • Collection of medical and chain of custody drug screens
  • Knowledge of test codes and specimen requirements
  • Knowledge of supporting diagnosis codes for tests that are ordered
  • Performs waived testing for glucose, hematocrit, hemoglobin, hemoglobin a1c, influenza, inr, pregnancy, rapid strep, and urine dips
  • Documentation of specimen collection information in EHR
  • Documentation of waived test results in EHR
  • Knowledge of centrifuge and all phlebotomy equipment
  • Processes samples that are sent to the reference lab for testing
  • Knowledge of PPE, safety procedures, and eye wash station
  • Knowledge of infection control practices
  • Maintains a clean and orderly appearance of laboratory
  • Knowledge of EHR, Care360, LabCorp, Paylocity, and insurance information systems
  • Knowledge of basic computer programs, outlook email, email encryption, excel, Microsoft word, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic faxing, phone system, and other clerical duties
  • Inventory (stocking, ordering, and checking expiration dates)
  • Monthly HEDIS and Gap Reports

20. Monthly Quest Informatics Reports

21. Reports any safety issues to the supervisor

22. Performs other duties that are assigned by your supervisor

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Not applicable-no assigned permanent staff to supervise.

CONTACTS: Interaction with patients, laboratory personnel, support workers, supervisors, co-workers, subordinates, other Innercare personnel, pharmacists, patients, and the general public.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Laboratory personnel may be exposed to odors, communicable disease, gas, fumes, noise, etc. Work is performed under stressful conditions. You must comply with the Innercare Corporate Compliance Program.

Maintain privacy of all patient, employee, and volunteer information and access such information only on a need to know basis for business purposes. Comply with all regulations regarding corporate integrity and security obligations. You must report unethical, fraudulent or unlawful behavior or activity.

Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or equivalent, California Department of Public Health Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 (CPT1) or California Department of Public Health Certified Phlebotomy Technician 2 (CPT2), current CPR certification, minimum of one year college and/or Medical Assistant Program, at least one year experience in a laboratory field is preferred

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods, practices and terminology including computers; ability to develop, learn, interpret and/or communicate rules, regulations, procedures and policies; ability to develop, learn, interpret and/or communicate rules, regulations, procedure and policies; ability to assess and make recommendations regarding service and productivity enhancement; ability to follow and given oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with subordinates, coworkers, supervisors; ability to plan and implement various programs and projects as assigned; ability to learn new information and skills to enhance job performance; ability to prepare reports and records with accuracy and to maintain patient confidentiality as required; ability to make required calculations accurately; ability and willingness to work irregular hours as necessary.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Normal medical laboratory environment. Work requires the ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time, and to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort in the performance of laboratory procedures, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight.
