Job Summary / Basic Function
This position reports to the Director of Public Safety and is responsible for the safety, welfare, and security of students, staff, faculty and visitors, and acts to protect University property and ensure the lawful operation of motor vehicles on campus. This position is classified under hazardous environmental conditions, exposing the employee to risk of injury. The Patrol Officer performs the following essential work functions:

1) Patrols campus and University grounds.
2) Writes/files incident and activity reports, arrest cards, and maintenance slips.
3) Investigates criminal incidents; issues criminal citations; makes misdemeanor and felony arrests for prosecution.
4) Manages traffic in compliance with Commonwealth and University vehicle codes; issues traffic citations and parking tickets.
5) Monitors building security and provides security for special events and athletic functions.
6) Controls access to building permit holders; secures lost and found articles.
7) Provides first response for medical emergencies and assistance in the care and transportation of the sick and injured.
8) Operates a two-way radio; drives a patrol vehicle; responds to fire alarms.
9) Appears at inquiries, judicial proceedings, and investigations to present testimony.
10) Maintains equipment, uniforms, and patrol vehicle.

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Minimum of Education / TrainingRequired Education Summary
Knowledge of Commonwealth laws, rules, and regulations governing motor vehicle operation and personal conduct for employees or visitors at Commonwealth facilities. Knowledge of Commonwealth provisions for emergency situations. Must possess some knowledge of group behavior. Skill in the use and care of offensive and defensive weapons. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper courses of action. Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate and relate to student issues and concerns; ability to perform well in an interview.

Preferred Qualifications
One year of police experience and formal training in the provisions of basic police services as certified through Act 120 training; or, any equivalent experience or training. A physical exam from medical provider or equivalent must be obtained upon hire.
