General Description

The Parks Maintenance Worker, under general supervision of the Parks Foreman, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the daily maintenance and operation of the City of Middleton's Parks and Recreation Department areas. This critical role is a front-line operational employee who executes tasks both individually and as a part of a team.

The Parks Maintenance Worker ensures the safety, accessibility, and conditions of City of Middleton parks meet the expectation and needs of both citizens and businesses of the city. The position must frequently determine practices and procedures in varied work situations and is expected to use independent judgment when appropriate.

Administrative Details:

This position is a Regular Full-Time Permanent position. Full time employees are eligible and required to participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). Job Functions

Essential Functions

  • Maintain the parks, recreation, and forestry system including but not limited to playground equipment, park, conservancy, recreation & aquatic facilities.
  • Operate a variety of equipment & machinery including dump trucks, tractors, front end loaders, mowers, aerators, turf equipment, hand & power tools and sprayers in the performance of a variety of tasks.
  • Care for trees, shrubs, flowers, and turf within municipal property boundaries.
  • Perform light mechanical work on mowers and small engines, as well as various other parks equipment.
  • Remove snow from ice rinks, public sidewalks, parking lots, and bike paths.
  • Maintain winter ice skating facilities.
  • Maintain athletic field facilities.
  • Perform semi-skilled work involving concrete, carpentry, plumbing, painting and basic electrical.
  • Assist with opening & closing of parks, recreation and forestry facilities including but not limited to the aquatic center, splashpad, and irrigation systems.
  • Assist with memorial bench & tree program and adopt-a-park program.
  • Assists with the management of wildlife habitat.
  • Assist with pond maintenance, pond operations, and aerator operations.
  • Assist City Forester as assigned.
  • Provide necessary work direction of seasonal and limited term employees

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of the methods and maintenance of Parks, Recreation & Forestry facilities, materials, tools, and equipment commonly used in park and aquatic center maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the rules of safe operation of equipment and tools, workplace safety and accident prevention.

Skills

  • Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel)

Abilities

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to interact and work with Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department employees, City Staff, the general public, and volunteers.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle

Education, Training and Experience

Education

  • High school diploma or an equivalent.

Training

  • Must possess or obtain and maintain certification for playground inspection (CPSI) within two (2) years of employment.
  • Must possess or obtain WI DATCAP herbicide & pesticide applicator permit within three years of employment.
  • Must possess or obtain Wisconsin Fire Management basic Fire Control Certification within three (3) years of employment
  • Must posses or obtain Certified Pool and Spa Operator Certification or equivalent within two (2) years of employment.

Experience

  • One to three (1-3) years' experience in park or facility maintenance, construction work, or within skilled trades is desired.
  • One to three (1-3) years’ experience in basic plumbing and/or equipment operation is desired.
