The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves. The parks feature 41 trailheads and more than 200 miles of trails, and 182 city parks. Additionally, there are 32 community and recreation centers, classes and sports programs for all ages, 29 pools, eight golf courses, and a variety of specialty and cultural venues and facilities.

The Parks and Recreation is seeking qualified candidates for the Equipment Operator II*gangmower position. This position is responsible for operating the "gangmower." This is a large tractor with rear and front reels and two retractable reels on both sides. They mow the grass in parks and on golf courses. This assignment is differentiated by mower operators in the Equipment Operator III class by mowing on off-road property. The Equipment Operator III mowers are used for road shoulders and medians.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Ability to perform minor mechanical adjustments/maintenance to equipment is essential.
  • Ability to exercises good judgment when working unsupervised in the field and when providing direction to lower classifications.
  • Ability to communicate with supervision orally, in written form, one-on-one, and in group settings on a professional level.
  • Ability to document work effectively.
  • Working knowledge of 2-way radio communications and other wireless devices.

SALARY


$17.62 (minimum) - $23.97 (maximum) hourly / $36,649.60 - $49,857.60 annually

Pension Information

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a departmental training course (certified by Personnel) for equipment being tested.
  • OR (2) be qualified for "out-of-class" pay as an Equipment Operator II.
  • OR (3) log 120 hours on equipment being tested for.
  • OR (4) have a minimum of two years of experience operating commercial equipment under two tons.
  • Six months of which must be operating on the same or related type of equipment performed by Equipment Operators II.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.

  • These positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
  • In addition, some positions may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (C.D.L.). Pre-employment drug testing is required for C.D.L. positions. Employees in C.D.L. positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of experience operating light duty equipment, including box trucks with lift gate operations, 5th wheel truck and trailer combinations, water trailers, and/or other vehicles.
  • Experience inspecting and troubleshooting equipment experience higher than entry level.
  • Experience working with maintenance facility operation.
  • Experience of turf management, sports fields maintenance, mowing and other landscape experience.
  • Experience in performing mechanical adjustments to equipment.
  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
