Description of Work: The park ranger position provides educational programming, natural resource management, law enforcement/emergency services, seasonal employee supervision, administration, operations, and maintenance. The Park Ranger is a commissioned law enforcement officer and will enforce state laws and park regulations through patrol, education, warnings, citations, and arrests.
  • Research the natural and cultural resources found at the Park and develop and implement resource management plans to include prescribed fire and invasive species removal.
  • Prepare and conduct environmental interpretation and education programming.
  • Performs and directs emergency medical response and emergency rescue in the park and other parks upon need.
  • Assist with maintenance of park facilities for routine maintenance and minor repairs, as needed.
  • Operational duties include issuing facility permits, opens, and closes facilities, and purchasing equipment and supplies.
  • May hire and supervise temporary/seasonal employees.
  • Serves as the park contact for public information requests.
Required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Prior to Employment:
Selected candidates are required to have successful results in physical and psychologica l examinations to include drug testing and a background investigation as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education, Training and Standards Commission.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Job Requirements:

  • Applicant must be able to prepare and conduct educational programs.
  • Applicant must be able to perform in operations, facility upkeep and/or administration of parks, attractions, other outdoor recreation areas or visitor focused entities.
  • Applicant must be able to perform the physical demands of the job for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions in all extremes of weather.
Applicant must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and meet DOA Fleet Safety Policy guidelines.
Must successfully pass Basic Law Enforcement Training within 18 months of employment.

Within 12 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain:
  • Successfully complete CPR Certification
  • Successfully complete Wildland Fire Suppression
  • Successfully complete Division Sponsored Chainsaw Training
Within 30 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain:
  • Successfully complete Emergency Medical Responder (EMR);
  • Successfully complete Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (FUNSAR)

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree preferably in Parks and Recreation and/or Natural Science from an appropriately accredited institution; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
