About the Opportunity

Nova Scotia Health Authority will provide you with the challenge and opportunity you are looking for as a professional Graduate Nurse. We are seeking Graduate Nurses who share our values of compassion and excellence, and our commitment to building our culture.


The Graduate Nurse (GN) is:

  • Accountable to function within her/his level of competence utilizing nursing process, critical thinking, and problem solving skills to provide holistic care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the life span
  • Responsible for the overall coordination and direction of nursing care, and accountable for the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the plan of care to achieve patient/client outcomes
  • Knowledgeable, skilled, and has the judgment needed to provide competent, evidenced based nursing practice, and contributes to the efficient and effective functioning of the unit/program/specialty
  • Responsible for maintaining and continually enhancing competencies through ongoing professional development including participation in education programs, research, and continuous quality activities
  • Responsible to practice according to the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Graduate Nurses, the Nova Scotia College of Nursing Standards of Nursing Practice, specialty standards as applicable, and the policies and procedures of NSHA
  • Responsible and accountable for his/her nursing practice and conduct as defined by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing and for ensuring that his/her registration is current and valid


Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing within the last twelve months or coming twelve months, and eligible for licensing in Nova Scotia
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment
  • BLS Certificate (active First Aid and CPR at Health Care Provider (HCP) level)

Hours of Work

  • Permanent, full-time supernumerary position; 75 hours biweekly
  • Shifts may include evenings, weekends, and holidays

Salary Information

NSNU Graduate Nurse $31.1326/per hour and after you provide proof of your active-practicing license with NSCN it is $35.0356/per hour

NSGEU Graduate Nurse $31.1326/per hour and after you provide proof of your active-practicing license with NSCN it is $34.8623/per hour


Other Information

  • Should you be hired into ICU, ER, OR, or NICU (Cape Breton) you will be required to provide proof of your active-practicing license prior to starting employment and complete the relevant post graduate nursing program after commencing employment and attend all the training sessions for the unit. Graduate Nurses sponsored for a relevant post graduate nursing program will be required to sign a return of service agreement based on the hiring zone.
  • Every effort will be made to assign Graduate Nurses to their nursing area of interest/unit/program/specialty.
  • These positions are Nursing Bargaining unit positions.
  • Applicants will not be considered for an interview if applications are incomplete or are missing information.
  • Applicants currently working permanently as a Graduate Nurse/Registered Nurse or in the process of being hired permanently with Nova Scotia Health are not eligible for consideration.
  • Successful applicants hired for difficult to recruit to areas may be eligible for financial hire incentives.
