Narrative Power Building Strategist Job at Sierra Club

Sierra Club Oakland, CA

Job Title: Narrative Power Building Strategist
Department: Digital Strategies
Unit: Digital Power Building
Location: Flexible/Remote
Reports to: Narrative Organizing and Power Building Manager

Context: At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of togetherness. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel inequity, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our democracy. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it.

Sierra Club is comprised of staff across the country and a network of volunteer leaders and local chapters that support our grassroots engagement. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with two labor unions representing more than half of our employees.

Scope: The Digital Strategies department plays a key role in building and engaging our supporter base online - building power through cultivating shared analysis, practice and narrative with our base about Sierra Club’s role in climate, political and movement spaces.

The Narrative Power Building Strategist works to build and execute the Sierra Club narrative organizing, base building, digital volunteer leadership development, and political education work, in partnership with Sierra Club colleagues across departments.

Through digital and visual storytelling, narrative organizing, training, and leadership development, this role will help build broad-based people power to achieve campaign, policy and culture-shifting outcomes. The Narrative Power Building Strategist will support the larger priority work around consciousness raising of our base – building our base’s equity analysis, skills and power while incorporating an intersectional framework around race, class and gender into our environmental work.

The ideal candidate has demonstrated ability to develop multi-platform storytelling initiatives that have led to concrete outcomes; experience with integrated online, distributed, and field organizing components within campaigns; and can develop generative partnerships at both the national and state-based chapter levels in order to deliver collaborative and successful strategies.

The Sierra Club centers principles of equity, justice, and inclusion in every aspect of our work. A Sierra Club staff member is committed to modeling the Jemez Principles and our organizational Equity Values, including demonstrating a commitment to self-transformation and the transformation of our organization.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

  • Narrative Strategy + Storytelling: Plans, executes and measures innovative narrative strategies across digital platforms to influence public opinion and shift dominant societal narratives, including creative content development. Identifies, supports and elevates grassroots voices in service of narrative building and climate justice campaign goals, including user-generated content and story-based strategies.
  • Political Education: Supports consciousness raising, skill building, and equity analysis development for staff and volunteers that lead to cultural and behavioral change. Supports staff and volunteers to incorporate intersectional frameworks around race, class and gender into environmental work.
  • Training + Leadership Development: Supports and executes cycles of digital leadership development – working with cross-department stakeholders to create absorption pathways for our digital base to make Sierra Club their long-term organizing home. Organizes, facilitates, and coordinates training and strategy sessions, virtual meetings, mobilizations, or other large events as needed in partnership with allied organizations and national Sierra Club campaigns.
  • Base Building: Plans, executes and measures creative and story-based strategies to reach new, younger, and more diverse audiences while strengthening the skills and understanding of our current base. Supports volunteers to organize their own networks and communities through distributed and relational organizing efforts.
  • Collaboration: Works with internal stakeholders – including but not limited to Digital Strategies, Communications, Organizing, Grassroots Power Building departments and Chapters – to create narrative organizing strategies, story-based content, trainings and leadership development opportunities. Works with allied organizations on shared efforts.
  • Data, Testing & Innovation: Collaborates with others to foster a culture of innovation, employing digital best practices in testing and optimization. Supports data- and values-driven processes for ongoing input, feedback and iteration. Uses and partners with teams who lead Sierra Club’s suite of digital tools to develop segmented lists, track and report results, target emails/phone numbers, and link to appropriate web pages.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience with grassroots storytelling and/or messaging development within campaigns, community-based initiatives, or movement building efforts.
  • Experience with developing curriculum and facilitating trainings as part of long-term strategy and grassroots leadership development.
  • A demonstrated history of developing creative content (such as graphic design, photo, video, or other multimedia components) and digital tools (such as email, peer-to-peer texting or broadcast SMS, social media, digital ads, live streams)
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement grassroots organizing strategies that operate at the intersections of climate, racial and economic justice.
  • Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:

  • A proven track record of project management skills – able to see problems and develop solutions, balancing competing priorities to successful and timely outcomes.
  • Experience developing story-based strategy, grassroots messaging, and creative asset development across multiple platforms as part of campaigns.
  • Experience developing, training and sustaining teams of volunteers.
  • Existing working relationships with progressive movement partners, artists, storytellers or cultural influencers.
  • Experience using qualitative and quantitative data in innovation and strategy development – evaluating success and improving goals.
