Summary:

The Music Therapist shall assist in the development, organization, and coordination of available community and area resources to provide the highest quality Music Therapy program. The program will be designed to meet, in accordance with the comprehensive assessment, the interests and the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each resident participating in the Music Therapy program. Promote the program by creating promotional material for distribution; by offering staff, resident, and family member information sessions; by seeking out residents who may benefit and initiating contact with them/their families; by eliciting referrals from directors and other staff members; and any other means deemed necessary. Additionally, the music therapist will support with activities programming, assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of activities which are specifically designed enrich the lives of the Memory Care residents.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop, and implement one-on-one, dyad, or group music therapy activities which are specifically designed to enrich the lives of the participating residents with varying degrees of impairment.
  • Maintain a case load that generates sufficient revenue to support position.
  • Plan, review, and assess therapy sessions to monitor their effectiveness and help plan following sessions.
  • Prepare case notes and reports for other team members and family members.
  • Contribute to residents’ care planning by participating in assessments, developing service plan goals and approaches, and maintaining progress notes.
  • Participate in Health Maintenance Meetings as requested to review resident Individual Service Plans, notes changes in residents’ condition, and recommends changes in care plans and activities to meet resident requirements.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within all department of the community. Cooperate with medical colleagues and other professionals engaged in the care of their clients to agree on therapy objectives and meet the needs of the residents.
  • Assist the Memory Care Manager in identifying residents who may need added support and may benefit from these services and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions to provide such support.
  • Attend training courses and participate in other professional development activities as required.
  • Support with planning and implementation of activities and programming.

Knowledge and Skill:

  • Must be able to clearly and proficiently communicate with people of all ages, while maintaining an energetic and positive attitude.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team-based environment.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Must have excellent computer skills, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Property Management System.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret human service periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals.
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise with other medical and educational professionals, relatives and care workers.
  • Personal maturity and emotional stability to deal with sad and stressful situations.
  • Ability to empathize with adults with wide-ranging needs.
  • Patience, flexibility, and adaptability to respond to client needs.

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to read and write English and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Experience in retirement living/homecare is preferable
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings.
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in music therapy
  • Valid Board Certification.
  • High level of musicianship

Mental and Physical Requirements:

  • Requires ability to stand and walk short and long distances for extended periods of time.
  • Requires sitting, use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms above, below, and at shoulder length.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The team member frequently lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds. Must be able to push a minimum of 200 pounds and be able to push such weight a minimum distance of 200 feet.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during an emergency.
  • Ability to remain calm and positive in stressful situations.
