Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking experienced workers for the Customer Billing Division's Meter Reading Work Group. This position is responsible for collecting reads and facilitating accurate billing for SPU's 180,000 accounts. This position reports to a Meter Reader Supervisor.

SPU has an on-going need for temporary Meter Readers. We are currently seeking 2 temporary Meter Readers but will use this advertisement to establish a temporary pool for qualified applicants for future temporary assignments. The duration of the assignments may be between three (3) to eleven (11) months, depending on need.
This posting will be open for application continuously, but first consideration will be given to applicants who apply by 10/27/20.

Job Responsibilities

  • Drive a City-issued or personal vehicle to travel to residential and commercial sites to collect, on average, 500 water and sewer meter readings daily;
  • Locate, read and record readings of water and sewer meters for residential and commercial customers on assigned routes using a hand-held electronic meter reading device;
  • Check and report unsafe or improper conditions in and surrounding meter boxes. Report on defective meters;
  • Notify customers when meter is inaccessible for reading. Check for and report vacant premises;
  • Perform minor maintenance on water meter enclosures to assure lids are safely sealed and clear obstructions from meter boxes when necessary to access meters to obtain accurate readings;
  • Sequence new meters and instructions into routes and re-sequence routes when necessary;
  • Receive and report complaints from customers concerning utility reading, costs or consumption;
  • Assist in training new meter readers in reading routes, meter access, and proper recording of meter readings.

Qualifications

Ability to:

  • Walk up to 10 miles per day, 5 days per week;
  • Work independently in potentially hazardous environments, such as near high voltage equipment, construction areas, dark basements, remote areas or industrial compounds;
  • Crawl, climb, or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather;
  • Lift up to 75 pounds;
  • Work on all kinds of terrain.
Current Driver's License is required
A complete Driving Record will be required from the most competitive candidates.
A job offer is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-placement physical examination.
