Mental Health Counselor

Fred Finch in has an immediate opening for a Mental Health Counselor in our Contra Costa Transition Age Youth Program. CCTAY’s participant population includes young adults grappling with the challenges of homelessness as well as symptoms of mental illness as well as co-occurring substance abuse disorders and experiences of trauma or victimization. A participant’s length of enrollment in CCTAY depends on individual assessment. The average length of stay is 1½ years.

The CCTAY program draws from evidence-based and evidence-informed best practices to provide comprehensive, individualized services: The Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model informs how the multidisciplinary team operates and functions, while the Transition to Independence (TIP) model and Motivational Interviewing informs our interventions and treatment planning process. Individually designed services support participants to gain the skills, knowledge, and abilities to move successfully into adult life. Through their engagement in program services, participants learn to imagine and develop aspirations for the future. Our staff work with participants to establish a collaborative relationship and develop a service plan that centers around demonstrated needs, motivation, and attainable life goals. Staff provides a wide variety of supportive services designed to promote participant stability in their own community: mental health services; medication support; vocational/employment support and skills building; and educational and health linkages are all important elements of a comprehensive treatment.

Shifts Available
Full Time; Mon-Fri/8am-5pm

Salary Range

In accordance with California law, the expected salary range for this California position is between $26.00 and $33.92 hourly. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.



What You Bring To The Table (Key Qualifications -see Job Description for more details)

  • Enrollment in a M.A. Degree in Social Work or Counseling from an accredited college or university; OR Master’s Degree with two or more years of work experience in a mental health setting, but not waivered or registered with the board; OR A.A. Degree with six or more years of work experience; OR B.A. Degree with four or more years of work experience.
  • Certified to conduct a CANS/ANSA assessment within 90 days of employment if CANS/ANSA utilized by program.
  • Supervised experience in providing counseling services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk assessment, including danger to self or others, and effective community-based interventions for those with high risk.
  • Demonstrated cultural responsiveness in working with diverse families and communities.
  • Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies, and to learn and implement Pro- ACT (or other agency approved crisis de-escalation training).
  • Clean driving record: current CA Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 10 days after hired.
  • Must have access to dependable transportation; personal car insurance meeting minimum liability coverage required if position requires driving for work or transporting participants.
  • Basic computer and keyboarding competence with the ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and/or competency with electronic clinical documentation systems.

Preferred

  • One year post-graduate school experience with program target population (Example: intellectually disabled, homeless, teens or young adults, SED).
  • One year experience with program modality (example: school-based, residential, mobile/community-based, assertive community treatment, wraparound, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, triage and organize work.
  • Experience in using a strength-based, culturally competent approach to supervision, participant and community service.
  • Experience with relevant evidence-based practices (e.g., CBT, DBT, trauma-informed approaches).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse families and communities.
  • Experience in effectively using behavioral, crisis management and family/individual/group therapy skills.
  • Fluency in prevailing language(s) of the community services.
