Position Summary:
Operate or tend furnaces to melt and refine metal before casting or to produce specified types of ferrous and nonferrous metals. All activities associated with charging, melting, and tapping out all metallurgies. Must know the mixture and pouring temperature of each alloy melted. Should be able to identify different types of alloys, scrap and ignots to obtain proper mixtures. Responsible for melting and temperature of metals used in daily production. Perform other miscellaneous tasks as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Draw metal samples for furnaces or kettles for analysis, and calculate types and amounts of materials needed to ensure that materials meet specifications.
  • Drain, transfer, or remove molten metal from furnaces, and place it into molds, using hoists, pumps, or ladles.
  • Record production data, and maintain production logs. Record raw materials used.
  • Operate controls to move or discharge materials from furnaces.
  • Weigh materials to be charged into furnaces, using scales.
  • Interpret recipe from books.
  • Perform all required maintenance for refractory linings.]
  • Follow relevant work instructions and/or SOP.
  • May be required to operate industrial trucks (fork trucks, lift trucks, etc.)
  • May train new employees.

  • Uses the appropriate electronic or manual system to perform the work of the job or department. Computer system use is more extensive in this job.
  • May use computer systems to enroll in benefits and interact with other company data systems.

Knowledge
:
  • Reading, writing, speaking, comprehension and computer skills in the English language, typically developed through high school education or equivalent, with the ability to communicate effectively via all these modes.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing good customer services. This includes meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Production and Processing- Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture of goods.
  • Mathematics- Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, statistics, and their applications. Must be able to comprehend the meaning of the calculation.
  • Mechanical- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

  • Operation and Control- Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Operation Monitoring- Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Quality Control Analysis- Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Problem Sensitivity- The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Multitasking- Ability to move from task to task while maintaining concentration amid distraction.
  • Flexibility/Adaptability- Ability to adjust to new conditions and respond effectively to changing environments.
  • Teamwork- Coordinating efforts and supporting coworkers to produce the best outcome.

Physical Abilities:
  • Manual Dexterity- The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  • Near Vision- The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Control Precision- The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
  • Reaction Time- The ability to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) or to an error, when it appears.
  • Ability to perceive and interpret information through the senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch at a level considered normal for a healthy adult. Must exhibit good balance.
  • Maximum lifting requirement is 50 lbs.; any material of greater weight must be moved using machinery or team lift.

Working Conditions:
  • Must wear required safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, ear plugs, gloves, respirator (Facial hair cannot interfere with fit of respirator).
  • Daily exposure to dusts, fumes, metal sparks, and odors from an industrial environment.
  • Daily exposure to extreme heat.

Training, Certificates or Licenses
:
  • See ISO Skill review.

Education Required: Equivalent to high school education plus 2-3 years trades training.

Experience Required: 3+ months as foundry furnace operator preferred. Mathematical, technical, or engineering related experience preferred. Past work experience demonstrating the ability to multitask.
