Medical Copyeditor

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the nation’s leading advocacy organization for children’s healthcare, is seeking an early-career medical copyeditor with knowledge of AMA Manual of Style. Reporting to the Manager of Education Design Services, this role will develop, copyedit, and revise scholarly medical content, including virtual and live courses and self-assessments, using AMA and AAP style guidelines.


Hybrid working arrangement of 40% on-site at our Chicago suburb headquarters in Itasca, IL.

Some tasks include:

  • Complete copyediting tasks of medical course content and assessments during multiple revision cycles using AMA and AAP style guidelines. Participate in peer review meetings and provide best practice guidance as needed.
  • Fact check and verify electronic reference citations, proofread, and coordinate editors’ comments to ready content for peer-review and publication.
  • Attend virtual and in person peer-review meetings and perform real-time edits based on team consensus. Query and follow up with authors, editors, and staff regarding clarity, references, and permission requests.
  • Research table and figure citations and provide requisite documentation to secure permissions.
  • Quality control freelance copyediting and provide timely feedback to ensure adherence to AMA and AAP style guidelines.
  • Communicate with editors, subject experts, and faculty regarding style adherence concerns.
  • Maintain keywords and create annual subject index for the AAP Pediatrics Review and Education Program (PREP) self-assessment.
  • Collaborate with other design staff to achieve outstanding educational design products.
  • Cross-train with appropriate staff as needed.
  • Update and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications needed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience required.
  • At least two years’ related experience as a medical copyeditor required. Knowledge of AMA Manual of Style, publication development, and medical terminology required. Experience overseeing work of external copyeditors and working in an association preferred.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, pay close attention to detail, take initiative, work both independently and as part of a team, collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituents, and promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, project management, diplomacy, communication, writing/editing, and critical thinking skills required. Strong technical acumen essential with proficiency in MS Office and Google Docs and the ability to learn and apply new technologies; experience with virtual meeting platforms (eg, WebEx, Teams) and document collaboration sites (SharePoint) preferred. Some evening/weekend work and travel may be required.
