Mechanical Engineer, Payload Structures
Position Summary
This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.
Your Part of the Mission
- Responsible Engineer accountable for ‘cradle to grave’ development of hardware related to payload accommodations- from requirements setting, through design, analysis, production, and testing, to integration and flight
- Design, analyze, and own primary and secondary structures for payload accommodations
- Solve exciting problems on the engineering floor, launch test site and in-office designing/analyzing novel, light-weight hardware
- Hardware ownership focused on the primary and secondary structures, mechanisms, and separation systems, as well as associated high-level layouts- specifically related to payload accommodations
- Develop a variety of vehicle structural elements and configurations in concert with other engineering disciplines
- Assist in the development of manufacturing, integration, and test processes and procedures while partnering with our mission management and other customer-facing teams
- Support launch and mission operations
- Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
- Perform other duties assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other engineering discipline
- 0-3 years of experience in an aerospace design & manufacturing environment
- Interest in working in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
- Self-driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement, inter-team communication skills, and attention to detail
- Experience in Finite Element Analysis using industry tools such as FEMAP, NASTRAN, and ANSYS
- Expertise in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) drafting
- Knowledge/experience of the design, analysis, fabrication, and test of composite and metallic structures, and/or mechanisms
- Engineering experience in aerospace, racing, or similar fields, where mass and schedule are critical (experience specific to rocket payloads is not strictly necessary)
- Experience using NX/Teamcenter or similar applications
- Ability to thrive as a ‘one person team’
- Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
- Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
- Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit
