VMRC is recruiting for several Marine Police Officer (MPO) positions located in our Southern Area (Newport News Headquarters) and Northern Area (Heathsville Headquarters). These positions serve as uniformed officers with responsibilities for consistent and effective enforcement of the laws and regulations on marine life conservation, exercises authority in boarding vessels for inspecting harvesting and transporting; licensing, polluted area sanitation; boating safety and navigation; performing search, rescue, and assistance on the waterways. These positions may issue summonses and make appearances in court. These positions serve on major vessels and operate radio-equipped patrol cars with trailable boat. Performs dockside inspections and boards commercial and recreational boats. May be called upon for special assignments involving homeland security or undercover observation . These positions have variable work schedules to include 7 days a week with rotating shifts. Assignments and work schedules vary according to fluctuation in harvesting, weather, seasons, and markets. These positions require a 12-month probationary period. Non-certified MPOs will be required to attend the Law Enforcement Academy. Continued employment is contingent upon successfully completing all requirements and obtaining a certification.


Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications and Knowledge- Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be atleast 21 years of age
  • Must have a High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Must be eligible for a Valid Virginia Driver’s License
  • Must be able to communicate with a diverse population
  • Must be able to interpret and apply policy/regulations in order to make sound decisions
  • Must have previous experience and/or training via employment or volunteering that enables ability to be an effective verbal and written communicator
  • Ability to effectively complete reports and files,
  • Must be free from commercial fishing interests:
  • Desire candidates that are familiar with Virginia waters and boating
  • Law Enforcement Certification is desired, but not required
Law Enforcement certification helpful but not required.

  • NOTE: This position requires passing of physical agility and swim test, the National Police Officers Standard Test, a criminal background investigation, credit check, physical exam and drug testing. Federal law prohibits a person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from carrying a firearm. Visible tattoos must be covered; however, body jewelry is prohibited
