Propulsion Manufacturing Engineer

Position Summary
Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as a Propulsion Manufacturing Engineer. If you join us in this position, you will assist in building propulsion hardware for the LauncherOne small satellite launch program. This role is for a hands-on person with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California.

Your Mission:
  • Ensure a high level of process control is achieved through clear process specifications, work orders, and process design
  • Assist with implementation of process improvements to reduce build cost and achieve quality targets
  • Assist with facility layout for propulsion production and test processes, ensuring detailed planning is done to support cost and rate targets
  • Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place
  • Constantly learn new things—and share them with your team members
  • Perform other duties as assigned
What you bring:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in aerospace, mechanical or an equivalent relevant field
  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience as a manufacturing/process engineer or equivalent
  • Manufacturing engineering experience with complex discrete mechanical assemblies and sub-assemblies (propulsion-specific experience a plus but not required)
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement
  • Ability to add something unique and positive to our team
  • Generally high level of all-around awesomeness
  • Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when (occasionally) needed
  • Must be able to provide proof of US-approved Covid-19 full vaccination status, unless otherwise exempted by an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation from Virgin Orbit

  • Engineering experience with any of the following are a plus but not required:
  • Propellant management and pressurization systems
  • Fluid systems and fluid system components, including valves and tubing
  • Handling COPVs or other composite structures a plus
  • Building and testing propulsion or fluid systems a plus
  • Demonstrated experience transitioning products from prototype manufacturing through volume production including Design for Manufacture and Assembly
  • Knowledge and understanding of lean manufacturing and its application to low and medium volume production programs
  • Experience with Siemens NX/Teamcenter, Oracle and Solumina is a plus
  • Familiar with the use of PFMEAs to reduce risk to the manufacturing process

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
