The Billy Wright Landfill, located at 17173 Billy Wright Rd., Los Banos, CA 93635, is looking for a highly motivated individual who is willing and able to work outdoors in variable weather conditions, perform heavy physical labor and be part of a team that values productivity and a teamwork environment.

Maintenance Worker I is the entry and training level in the Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents may be assigned to operate heavy equipment on training or relief assignments.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Operates a variety of equipment at disposal sites to process, compact and cover refuse.
  • Performs a variety of heavy physical work including sorting, processing and clean-up of recyclables and waste materials.
  • Practices dust control at disposal sites by operating a water truck.
  • Performs general clean-up at site.
  • Operates mowers to mow weeds and grass.
  • Maintains time and equipment records.
  • Performs maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Operates a computerized scale system to weigh vehicles and completes cash and credit transactions; balances daily receipts.
  • Directs traffic and monitors unloading in the disposal and recycling areas.
  • Screens incoming loads for hazardous materials.
  • Process materials at the ABOP and e-waste sites.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

Previous experience performing integrated waste maintenance and construction and/or other heavy physical labor is highly desirable.

License:

Possess and maintain a valid Class "C" California driver's license.

Knowledge of:

  • Operation and maintenance of heavy equipment used in landfill operations.
  • Safe operation of heavy grounds equipment.
  • Landfill environmental policies and regulations.
  • Applicable provisions of California vehicle code relating to the operation of medium and heavy equipment.
  • Methods, equipment and materials used in landfill operations and grounds maintenance work.
  • Methods, supplies and tools used in caring for landfill areas.
  • Health and safety regulations.
  • Operation of a computer and assigned software.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.

Ability to:

  • Skillfully and safely operate a variety of heavy equipment involved in landfill and grounds maintenance activities.
  • Maintain heavy equipment in a safe and operative condition.
  • Service and make repairs to assigned landfill equipment.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Plan and schedule work assignments in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Inspect and classify different types of solid waste quickly and accurately.
  • Use heavy equipment, to cut, fill and level areas at solid waste facilities.
  • Segregate and bill charges for solid waste according to established prices and policies.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Maintain routine records and logs related to work performed.
  • Observe health and safety regulations.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work independently with little direction.

  • Outdoor/Landfill environment.
  • Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.
  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects as assigned by position.
  • Heavy physical labor.
  • Frequent repetitive hand and arm motion.
  • Wear a respirator or safety glasses or other protective clothing and equipment.
  • Occasionally kneel, bend, twist, squat, climb, balance and crawl.
  • Occasionally climb equipment up to 14 feet in height.
  • Frequently work around dust, dirt, refuse, strong odors and noise.
  • Seeing to perform heavy equipment work.
  • Digging.


Hazards:

  • Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
  • Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease, gases.
  • Exposure to noise from heavy equipment.
  • Adverse weather conditions.
  • Potential exposure to dissatisfied customers.
