Position Summary

This position is a member of the Aviation Department of the Palms Springs International Airport and supervises and coordinates a variety of maintenance and custodial activities within assigned areas of responsibility including City facilities, buildings, equipment, maintained landscaped areas, and park areas; implements program goals and objectives; and performs a variety of administrative, professional, and technical tasks in support of assigned area of responsibility.

This position's assignment will have special focus on duties at the Palm Springs International Airport and will include maintenance supervision on both the airside and landside areas of the Airport. The ideal candidate will have working experience with building and mechanical systems, facility maintenance, and airport terminology.

Examples of Essential and General Responsibilities

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversee and coordinate maintenance activities; plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for performing maintenance and custodial work for Airport facilities on airside, landside and terminal areas, equipment, other related areas, and facilities.
  • Oversee and maintain airport maintenance service contracts and agreements including monitoring of services provided in accordance with contract provisions within areas of responsibility.
  • Recommend and assist in the development and implementation of goals and objectives.
  • Establish schedules and methods for providing maintenance services.
  • Implement policies and procedures.
  • Monitor program performance; recommend and implement modifications to systems and procedures.
  • Train, supervise, and assist lower level maintenance staff in performing maintenance and repair duties.
  • Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures, coach, and evaluate performance.
  • Verify the work assigned to employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Inspect and monitor job sites for properly completed work; assess complex maintenance problems and coordinate with appropriate staff.
  • Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
  • Receive and investigate complaints regarding custodial and maintenance activities.
  • Perform complex and difficult maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Maintain and prepare a variety of records, logs and reports.
  • Review various plans, legal requirements, and related information to ensure compliance with regulations and equipment specifications.
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner.
  • Provide information within the area of assignment.
  • Resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

Minimum and Preferred Requirements

Minimum requirements must be clearly demonstrated on the application to be considered, however, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation to compete further in the selection process. (One year of work experience is the equivalent of 12 months of full-time work. Experience:
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible facilities maintenance, parks maintenance, or commercial property maintenance experience, which includes one (1) year of administrative or lead responsibility is required.
  • Experience working in an Airport or aviation environment is preferred.
  • Experience working with airport systems such as, but not limited to, boarding bridges, baggage handlers, and lighting is preferred.
  • Experience leading custodial, facility hygiene and environmental services in a public sector agency, aviation or similar environment is preferred. (Public sector agency includes Federal, State, County, City Government, Law Enforcement, or other government agency.)
  • Specialized building trades experience in HVAC, electrical and plumbing is preferred.
Training :
  • High School Diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • Specialized training in aviation maintenance, commercial maintenance, facilities maintenance, landscape maintenance, or related field is preferred.
Other Requirements:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver License with a satisfactory driving record (a driving record may be deemed unsatisfactory for any of the following reasons: three or more moving violations or reportable accident within the last three years; conviction of driving under the influence within the last five years) is required.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Badge, which is approved through the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is required.
  • Possession of an OSHA certification is preferred.
  • Possession of a designation as a Certified Member (C.M.) from the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) is preferred.
Special Requirements:
  • Incumbent will be enrolled in the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice Program. The DMV Pull Notice Program provides information on the incumbents driving record and driving record status on a periodic basis to the City.
  • Must be willing and able to work various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation and a physical and drug screen.
