Position Summary

Provides mechanical engineering decision-making skills for machines, automation, and carriers for ASI projects. This may include supervising other machine/carrier designers, drafting personnel and other necessary mechanical engineering personnel in order to provide a complete turnkey machine. Works closely with the Project Engineer, Electrical Project Engineer, and customer.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Receive design input from Project Engineer. Review customer specifications and functional requirements.
  • Establish design basis parameters for machinery and carriers using specifications and functional requirements in conjunction with customer standards and good engineering practices.
  • Develop and document dimensional basis for part, machinery, carrier interface points to clarify customer part locations on machinery and carriers. Establish reference points and benchmark plans to assist with layout development and field installation.
  • Perform engineering calculations required to assure proper operation of equipment. This may include FEA work, outside design review, peer review and/or customer approval. Customer approval alone is never to be relied upon for design verification.
  • Support proto-type development as necessary by specific project specifications. Plan projects to support proto-type requirements.
  • Understand schedule, keeping Project Engineer aware of the status. Seek guidance prior to allowing work to fall behind schedule. This includes the ability to identify long lead time items and ordering them when appropriate to avoid missing schedule dates.
  • Provide timely instructions for Fabrication, Installation, and Subcontractors through Project Engineer.
  • Conform to ISO requirements and R&M documentation requirements.
  • Provide clearance studies and layout information to layout personnel including safety fencing, screen guard and other fixed barriers. Give consideration to safe working clearances around machinery and equipment. Integrate maintenance access into base design.
  • Plan manufacturing of carriers and machinery considering lead-time, manufacturing methods, shipping size, and installation methods.
  • Consider the safety aspects of carriers and machinery as they relate to production and maintenance personnel. Assure clearance lines and cording studies, accumulation studies, merge studies, accumulation on turns, etc. are correct. Eliminate hazards, pinch points and provide safety devises using good engineering practices. Seek additional input from Project Engineer, Engineering Manager and Project Manager for any potential safety issues that require additional input to resolve.
  • Consider the maintainability of equipment. Consider serviceability in base design. Consider what and how service parts can be made to fit and installed with a reasonable effort. Consider and evaluate bearing life calculations for the inclusion of special lubrication needs and/or the elimination of re-lubrication provisions. Assist Technical Documentation group in the development of spare parts lists and special maintenance procedures for carriers, mastering fixtures and machinery.
  • Consider special assembly requirements that may include welding symbols, heat-treating requirements, mag-particle inspection, torque specifications, testing, documentation, and special installation methods. Assure engineering drawings clearly show requirements.
  • Travel to job sites to review work progress, attend meetings, review field conditions and assist with field installation issues. Travel may last for extended time periods.
  • Follow back-up procedures and utilize company resources appropriately
  • Demonstrate the ability to work professionally as a team player and willingness to assist others.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • May require working extended hours, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned or that become necessary to fulfill the company’s responsibilities and needs with respect to its business.

Qualification Requirements

  • An Associate Degree.
  • Must have technical skills to read, analyze and communicate requirements from specifications, drawings, and other design input information. Critical thinking skills are required to identify problems and issues prior to design completion.
  • Must be capable of working with interruptions and willing to travel to job sites.
  • Must have knowledge of Automotive Conveyor systems and the operational environment they reside in.
  • Understanding on conveyor dimensioning practices and tooling dimensioning practices and how to inter-relate these together.
  • Good communication skills working with other departments and customers.
  • Organizational skills to assist Project Engineer and System Designer.
