The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration seeks candidates to operate light rail cars over routes in accordance with MDOT MTA’s rules, regulations, and policies consistent with the safety and welfare of the general public. The selected candidate must safely operate MDOT MTA passenger light rail to pick up and discharge passengers on routes. He/She must also make clear and concise announcements as well as provide courteous and professional customer service.

Description

The Light Rail operator will perform the following duties:
  • Monitors console and radio communications to ensure that the vehicles are operating within established guidelines.
  • Manually operates control to open and close passenger doors.
  • Manually pushes Proceed button observing operating conditions and monitoring all lights, gauges, and equipment in the vehicle cab
  • Makes announcements to passengers regarding arrivals, transfer points, delays and emergencies and responds to passenger questions.
  • Maintains logs of work activities
  • Uses a variety of communication equipment, including a public-address system, two-way radios, and emergency telephones.
  • Manually throw track switches as required to establish routes for train movements when directed by Light Rail Control Supervisor during emergencies, power outages, and switch or signal malfunction periods.
  • Line work involving revenue includes the pick-up, store, and change of trains as required in the yard, online, or in terminal areas.
  • Yard work includes make-up of trains, shifting (including coupling and uncoupling), running cars through the washer, and other related duties as required.

This position is located in Baltimore City

Qualifications

Education: possess a high school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED).

Experience: Must have three (3) years of continuous employment (with the same employer) or a combined three (3) years of verifiable full or part-time student status and employment history.

Minimum of two (2) years customer service experience preferred.

NOTE:
Qualifying candidates must be at least 21 years old at the time for testing and possess the ability to satisfactorily complete the background check and medical examination process. The most desirable candidates are those who currently possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger Bus and Air Brakes endorsements. A copy of the CDL license will be verified prior to testing.


Licenses & Certifications

A current valid CDL License/Permit with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements with no restrictions is required.
