VACANCY INFORMATION

This is to fill current vacancies below as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies for the current and upcoming school year. Depending on the school site, work hours can range from 2 - 6 hours per day, up to 5 days per week, 9 - 10 months per year. Salary is based on actual hours worked. Some vacancies may qualify for district contributed benefits.

The current vacancies are at:
  • Altadena Elementary at 6 hours/day, 5 days/week (qualifies for benefits)
  • Washington Elementary at 6 hours/day, 5 days/week (qualifies for benefits)
  • Madison Elementary 4 hours/day, 5 days/week
  • Sierra Madre Elementary at 15 hours/week

Definition

Under the direction of a School Principal or designated Certificated Administrator at a secondary or elementary school, organizes and is responsible for the operation of an elementary and/or secondary school library; assists students and teachers; performs a variety of clerical duties related to the operation of the library as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions assigned to this class are responsible to the Principal and designated Certificated Administrator, for operating and maintaining a library at the elementary and secondary school level. Incumbents are responsible for library environment, circulation of materials, including textbooks and learning materials, direction of volunteers and supervising students using the library facilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS

Education: Graduation from secondary (i.e. high school) school or possession of its equivalent (GED). Possession of a Library Technician Certificate from an accredited 2 or 4 year college is desirable. Document upload required

Experience: One (1) year of full-time library experience is required. Experience with elementary and secondary age students is desirable.

SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS

Possession of a Library Technician Certificate is desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of a position with or without reasonable accommodation and without hazard to themselves or others. May be required to lift materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities of this class include but are not limited to:


  • Plans the library program with Principal and staff
  • Follows established district library procedures
  • Assists students and teachers in the selection of materials including checking materials in and out
  • Plans and conducts library orientations, book talks, story-telling, etc.
  • Schedules class visits to the library
  • Prepares book collections for classroom use
  • Prepares and processes library materials for circulation including cataloging and classifying
  • Prepares and maintains library environment through bulletin boards, displays and library housekeeping
  • Coordinates special reading and library special activities such as the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program
  • Prepares, maintains library circulation records and statistics
  • Maintains records of all library materials
  • Sends overdue notices and conducts periodic inventory
  • Recommends new materials for purchase
  • Orders and maintains needed supplies and materials
  • Performs clerical duties such as composing letters/memoranda, typing, filing, stamping and labeling
  • Supervises adult and student volunteers
  • Attends meetings
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as typewriter, adding machine, duplicating machines, computer hardware and software, and various types of Audio Visual (AV) equipment
  • Plans, coordinates textbook distribution, management and collection
  • Maintains records of textbooks through use of district-wide web-based database system
  • Collects money for lost and damaged textbooks and issues refunds as necessary
  • Performs other related duties as required

APPOINTMENT
Employees who receive a regular appointment to the class must serve a probationary period of one hundred and thirty (130) days of paid service. During this period, an employee must demonstrate an overall satisfactory level of performance; failure to do so shall result in the employee's termination without right of appeal.
Pay is based on actual hours worked.

Appointed candidate shall start at Step 1. Upon completion of 130 days probation and satisfactory evaluation, employee shall be advanced to Step 2. All other step advancement is granted each year after probationary period.
