About the Office:

The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) promotes the well-being of immigrant communities by recommending policies and programs that facilitate successful integration of immigrant New Yorkers into the civic, economic, and cultural life of the City. MOIA is one of the lead agencies for IDNYC, New York City’s successful municipal ID program and spearheads other initiatives to expand equity and empowerment for immigrant communities. The work of the Office cuts across a broad range of issues citywide—for example, workers’ rights, health equity, and language access—and MOIA works closely with sister cities around the country to promote immigrant inclusion.

About the Role:

The Adams’ Administration is committed to expanding language access and is launching an exciting new initiative to develop the City’s capacity to provide multilingual services to New Yorkers who speak languages other than English. One aspect of this initiative is to scale up MOIA’s Language Services Team to deliver timely, high-quality, culturally aware translation and interpretation services for MOIA, Mayoral Offices, and City Hall and to share best practices with city agencies. Established in 2016, MOIA’s Language Services Team has ensured that materials are translated, events are accessible to limited English speakers with the support of in-person interpreters, and staff have access to telephonic interpretation 24/7.

Under the direction of the Director of Language Services, the Language Access Hub Associate will work with internal linguistic resources and language services providers to deliver multilingual information and services to support programmatic and communications efforts of MOIA, other Mayoral offices, and City Hall. The Language Access Hub Associate will also be integral in the expansion of the team by supporting the piloting for workflows, technologies, provide training to new staffers, and supporting procurement of language services.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Ÿ Manage end-to-end translation and localization projects

o Respond to requests

o Coordinate with in-house language access specialists, who will assist in translating materials, typesetters, and external vendors

o Process, track and troubleshoot projects

o Communicate status of projects to requesters and supervisors

o Deliver final translations following project instructions and guidelines

Ÿ Coordinate interpretation requests

Ÿ Attend events requiring interpretation to coordinate interpreters, set up and distribute equipment

Ÿ Assist with technical support for virtual interpretation events through Zoom, WebEx, Teams, etc.

Ÿ Build and maintain resources to improve language service delivery (style guides, glossaries, term bases, translation memories, etc.)

Ÿ Assist in translating, editing and typesetting materials (target language depends on the specialization of the candidate – see qualifications).

Ÿ Reconcile invoices from multiple language service providers

Ÿ Track and analyze demand for services and budget

Ÿ Assist in the provision of language services across other Mayoral Offices, including providing trainings

Ÿ Assist with monthly and yearly reporting of translation and interpretation indicators

Ÿ Assist in the procurement of new language services and equipment, as needed

Ÿ Assist with other language access projects, as needed

Qualifications:

Ÿ A bachelor’s degree with 1 to 2 years of professional experience in translation, interpretation, localization and/or language services project management or coordination

Ÿ Native fluency in another language (Arabic, Bengali, Chinese or Spanish, preferred)

Ÿ Excellent project management, organizational, and analytical skills

Ÿ Experience juggling multiple priorities and responding to time-sensitive requests

Ÿ Strong time management skills and experience working with multiple stakeholders to address problems

Ÿ Ability to think creatively, embrace new approaches, and pioneer innovative solutions to intricate problems

Ÿ Diplomacy, tact, and excellent judgment

Ÿ Self-starter who can take initiative and work both individually and collaboratively as part of a team

Ÿ Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Ÿ Able to occasionally work weekend and/or evenings

Ÿ Highly professional demeanor

Ÿ Experience with WebEx, Zoom and/or Microsoft Teams

Ÿ Proficient computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

Ÿ Proficiency in Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, such SDL Trados Studio and MultiTerm

Ÿ Familiarity with localization tools, such as Smartling

Ÿ Familiarity with Adobe applications, such as InDesign and Illustrator, preferred

Salary Range:

$62,000 - $68,000
